With a BlackBerry, how do I wirelessly configure filters to control mail redirection?
On this page:
- Forward all messages
- Forward bodies of CC messages
- Preserve high priority flags when forwarding messages
- Forward mailing list messages
Filters are rules applied to messages as they arrive in your Exchange mailbox that determine whether or not to redirect the message to your BlackBerry device. With the implementation of BES 4.0 and later versions, you may now create filters directly from the BlackBerry device as well as through BlackBerry Desktop Software. Regardless of which interface you use, only one filter is set. Changes made to filters through either interface will affect message redirection to the device.
Note: The BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) service will be retired by January 1, 2015; see About the BES retirement. As of January 1, 2013, no new BES accounts are being created. UITS recommends you replace your BlackBerry with a device that is ActiveSync compatible. To learn more about ActiveSync, see What is Exchange ActiveSync?
The BlackBerry handheld has two preconfigured filters. The first, called "To & BCC Default", automatically forwards to your BlackBerry all email that is sent to you directly or as a blind carbon copy (BCC). The second, called "CC Default", forwards the headers of all email that is sent to you as a carbon copy (CC).
You can change these filters to forward the entire message by following these directions.
Forwarding all messages
You can instruct the handheld to forward all messages you receive, whether they match a filter or not, by specifying forwarding as the default action:
- On the BlackBerry handheld, open
Messages, click the Menu key, and selectOptions. ChooseEmail Filters.
- Under "When none of the above rules apply, send email to handheld",
choose
Yes. Now all matching messages will be forwarded to you as your filters specify, and any messages that match none of the filters will be forwarded to your BlackBerry. If you don't want the redirector to do any filter processing, change this answer toNo.
Forwarding only headers of CC messages
With BES 5.0, the bodies of Carbon Copy (CC) messages are forwarded to the handheld by default. To receive only headers of CC messages:
- On the BlackBerry handheld, open
Messages, click the Menu key, and selectOptions. ChooseEmail Filters.
- Click
CC Default, then click the Menu key and chooseEdit, and check theForward header onlybox.
- Click the Menu key, and choose
Save.

- Scroll down to the "Actions" field and select
Forward.
- Under "Actions", select
Forward with Level 1 Notificationand click the trackball. This checks the box next to this option.
- Click the Menu key, and choose

Forward mailing list messages
You can create a filter to forward messages from a mailing list to which you subscribe:
- On the BlackBerry handheld, open
Messages, click the Menu key, and selectOptions. ChooseEmail Filters.
- Click the Menu key, and then click
New....
- In the "Filter Name:" field, enter the name of the mailing list or lists
you want this filter to forward.
- Select the "Sent to:" field, and enter the mailing list or lists in the
