About sponsored accounts for conference participants at IU

Conference accounts are for participants of IU-sponsored conferences, workshops, or special programs who need access to secure IU-owned computing resources, such as the wired IU network, the Student Technology Centers (STCs), or Residential Technology Centers (RTCs). Conference accounts are for temporary use (typically days or weeks, less than a semester) and then they expire; extensions are not available.

Conference accounts are not personal accounts; see IU account types and eligibility. Conference accounts allow limited internet access (web browsing) to IU Secure or eduroam; IU Guest wireless is also available in selected common areas in campus housing. Access to wired network in campus housing requires a conference account, and the conference attendees must contact their campus Support Center for help registering their computer for wired network use. Participants can register their computer before the conference starts but must have their Conference account information available while working with the Support Center.

Conference accounts must be sponsored by a full-time faculty or staff member, and must be approved by UITS Tier 2 Accounts and Student Information Systems (ASIS). For more, see About conference use of the STCs.

To sponsor Conference accounts:

  1. Go to Manage your conference accounts
  2. Click set up conference accounts.
  3. Enter the requested information about the conference. Select Continue.

Once Tier 2 Accounts and Student Information Systems (ASIS) has processed your request, you will receive notification of the account usernames and passphrases available to your conference attendees. If you experience any problems requesting accounts, contact Tier 2. For help with other issues related to conference accounts, see If your IU Conference account won't let you access certain resources.

Conference coordinators must keep records of all Conference account users. In the case of a security or policy violation, the coordinator must be able to supply identity and contact information for the user of the offending account at the time of the incident, and must assist in problem resolution.

Note:
Sponsors of Indiana University accounts are responsible for ensuring that those accounts are not abused. Sponsoring access to IT resources gives the sponsored user the ability to represent IU through this affiliation, and sponsors should consider the consequences of that user causing harm by using IU IT resources. An official agreement of some type should therefore be in place between the sponsor and the person being sponsored. Prior to requesting the account, sponsors should consult with their department or school administration on how best to document the user's affiliation with and responsibilities to both IU and the sponsor's department. For more, see Your responsibilities as a computer user at IU.
