Using Oncourse Forums, how do I revise or delete a forum or topic?

Note: To complete these procedures, you must be assigned a role having the necessary permissions. To determine your role, follow the directions in Participant roles. To view a list of permissions associated with a given role, see Permissions, roles, and tools. For a basic understanding of roles and permissions, see Permissions and roles: Overview.

Note: To delete an individual forum message, see Deleting a forum message.

Revising a forum or topic

To revise a forum, a topic, or the default template for newly created forums:

  1. In your site's menubar, click Forums, and then click one of the following:

    • Template Settings: Settings from this default template will apply each time you create a new forum. You can override these settings for an individual forum or topic after you've created it.
    • Forum Settings: The forum settings override the default template settings for an individual forum.
    • Topic Settings: This setting overrides the default template and forum settings for an individual topic.

  2. For a forum or topic, you can change the title, descriptions, and attachments. You can also choose to disable postings. For a forum or topic or the default template, you can choose to modify permissions, enable moderation, or cause all messages in threads to be marked as read. For more about permissions, see Controlling access to Forums.

Note: When you use Firefox 3 to save a page or tool item containing an empty WYSIWYG (rich text) field, the resulting item may behave as if it has empty content for that field. For example, a forum topic might have a Read Full Description link that leads to empty content, or you may see an icon allowing you to expand some text, but see no additional content when you do so. To remove the code causing this behavior, open the page (i.e., to edit the item's settings), click Source in the WYSIWYG toolbar, delete all content in the Source view, and re-save the page.

  3. When you're finished, click one of the following:

    • Save: Saves your changes and returns you to the Forums screen
    • Save Draft: Saves your forum as a draft and returns you to the Forums screen
    • Save Settings & Add Topic: Saves your changes and opens the Topic Settings screen for adding a new topic to your forum; see Creating a new forum and topic in Forums
    • Delete: Removes your forum and/or topic with all associated messages, and takes you to a confirmation page
    • Cancel: Cancels your changes and returns you to the Forums screen

Deleting a forum or topic

To delete a forum or topic you've created:

  1. On the Forums screen, next to the title of the forum or topic you wish to delete, click Forum Settings or Topic Settings.

  2. At the bottom of the screen, click Delete.

  3. You'll be prompted to confirm the deletion. At the bottom of the page, click Delete or Cancel.
