About IT Training workshops

IT Training offers award-winning instructor-led workshops and advanced EdCert courses on more than 100 information technology topics. IT Training workshops are available on the Indiana University Bloomington and IUPUI campuses as well as online. Members of the statewide IU community can take workshops (not EdCert courses) at no charge, and the general public can take workshops and some EdCert courses for a nominal fee. IT Training workshops are hands-on, instructor-led workshops in word processing, email, spreadsheets, databases, graphics, presentations, statistics, programming, multimedia and web development, and more. Workshops range from introductory to advanced, and most last from 90 minutes to three hours each.

IT Training Certificate Series combine several IT Training workshops in sequential order; by attending a series of related workshops, you can earn certificates and increase your skills over time.

Eligibility and registration

IT Training workshops and Certificate Series provide hands-on training to IU students, faculty, and staff, as well as to the general public. UITS recommends advance registration, but walk-in registration for classroom-delivered workshops is possible when seats are available.

To register online for individual IT Training workshops, see the list of IT Training topics. To register online for IT Training Certificate Series, see IT Training Certificate Series.

For more, see IT Training. You can also contact IT Training staff.

Descriptions and prerequisites

Check the descriptions of all workshops. If you don't already have the recommended skills, you can acquire them by taking the prerequisite workshops. Having the recommended skills will enable you to get the full benefit of the workshop you are attending.

Length

Most workshops are 90 minutes to three hours in length and combine instructor-led lecture with hands-on practice. Assistants are available to help participants.

Location

Most classroom-delivered IT Training workshops meet in the Herman B Wells Library at IUB, and in the ICTC building at IUPUI. IUB workshops are occasionally held in the Cyberinfrastructure Building (CIB), and a few IUPUI workshops are hosted in the Campus Center. Your workshop location will be included in your registration confirmation notice. For more, see Our Facilities at About IT Training.

Materials and exercises

For those attending a workshop

Workshop participants will have access to a PDF version of the materials on a second monitor available at each workstation in the classroom, and will be able to take electronic notes on those materials and save or email themselves a copy of those materials after the workshop.

For those who prefer to use printed materials in the classroom, IU community members can download the materials from the IT Training web site, and then print a copy to bring to the workshop. Anyone can order printed materials from the IT Training web site for a small fee.

For those not attending a workshop

Members of the IU community can download materials from the IT Training web site. Others can purchase materials for self-study; see Order Workshop Materials. Most workshops also use exercise files you can download to practice on your own; see Download Materials & Exercise Files.

Special needs

IT Training can provide assistance for people with disabilities. Advance notice is important, so contact IT Training as early as possible.

Fees

IT Training workshops (not EdCert courses) are offered at no charge to students, faculty, and staff from any IU campus, and are offered to everyone else for a nominal fee. Paying participants in IT Training Certificate Series will receive a 10% discount if they register for all series workshops at once.

Cancellations, rescheduling, and refunds

If IT Training must cancel or reschedule a workshop for which you are registered, your enrollment fee will be refunded.

If you pay to enroll in an IT Training workshop and cannot attend, IT Training will refund your money if you cancel your enrollment at least two calendar days before the date of the workshop. You can cancel enrollments online from your User Profile.

If you register for all workshops in a series at once and receive the 10% discount, you will not be able to cancel an individual workshop enrollment. If a conflict arises that will prevent you from attending a series workshop for which you are registered, contact IT Training staff; they will attempt to reschedule you in another session of the same workshop.

IT Training strives to ensure that seats are available for everyone. Therefore, if you register for and fail to attend or give adequate cancellation notice for three free workshops during an academic year, you will lose free registration privileges for the rest of that academic year. If you need to cancel free workshop enrollment, please do so at least two days before the workshop is taught to avoid this problem.

If you lose free registration privileges, you will still be able to register for workshops by paying a registration fee. You will also be able to take advantage of the free registration option by walking in and registering at the workshop itself, provided seats are available. Free registration privileges are restored to all IU students, faculty, and staff every August.

For more, see the IT Training FAQ. You can also contact IT Training staff.
