About STEPS workshops

IT Training & Education offers award-winning STEPS workshops on more than 80 information technology topics. STEPS workshops are available on both the Indiana University Bloomington and IUPUI campuses, and are open to the statewide IU community and the general public. STEPS are hands-on, instructor-led workshops in word processing, email, spreadsheets, databases, graphics, presentations, statistics, programming, multimedia and web development, and more. STEPS workshops range from introductory to advanced, and most last from 90 minutes to three hours each. Workshops are free to enrolled IU students, and are available to everyone else for a nominal fee.

STEPS Certificate Series combine several STEPS workshops in sequential order; by attending a series of related workshops, you can earn certificates and increase your skills over time.

Eligibility and registration

STEPS workshops and Certificate Series provide hands-on training to IU students, faculty, and staff, as well as to the general public. UITS recommends advance registration, but walk-in registration is possible when seats are available.

To register online for individual STEPS workshops, see Browse STEPS Workshops. To register online for STEPS Certificate Series, see the STEPS Certificate Series page.

For more, see IT Training & Education. You can also contact IT Training & Education staff.

Descriptions and prerequisites

Check the descriptions of all workshops. If you don't already have the recommended skills, you can acquire them by taking the prerequisite workshops. Having the recommended skills will enable you to get the full benefit of the workshop you are attending.

Length

Most workshops are 90 minutes to three hours in length and combine instructor-led lecture with hands-on practice. Assistants are available to help participants.

Location

Most STEPS workshops meet in the Herman B Wells Library at IUB, and in the ICTC building at IUPUI. Occasionally IUB workshops are held in the Wrubel Computing Center, and a small number of IUPUI workshops are hosted in the Student Center. Your workshop location will be included in your registration confirmation notice. For more, see About Our Training Facilities.

Materials and exercises

At the workshops, you will receive materials to keep at no additional charge. If you are not attending a workshop, you can purchase materials to learn on your own; see Order STEPS Materials. Most workshops also use exercise files you can download to practice on your own; see Download Exercise Files.

Cancellations, rescheduling, and refunds

If IT Training & Education must cancel or reschedule a STEPS workshop for which you are registered, your enrollment fee will be refunded.

If you enroll in a STEPS workshop and cannot attend, IT Training & Education will refund your money if you cancel your enrollment at least three weekdays before the date of the workshop. You can cancel enrollments online from your User Profile.

If you register for all workshops in a series at once and receive the 10% discount, you will not be able to cancel an individual workshop enrollment. If a conflict arises that will prevent you from attending a series workshop for which you are registered, contact IT Training & Education staff; they will attempt to reschedule you in another session of the same workshop.

IT Training & Education strives to ensure that seats are available for everyone. Therefore, if you register for and fail to attend three free workshops during an academic year, you will lose free registration privileges for the rest of that academic year. If you need to cancel free workshop enrollment, please do so at least three weekdays before the workshop to avoid this problem.

If you lose registration privileges, you will still be able to register for free workshops by paying a registration fee. You will also be able to take advantage of the free registration option by walking in and registering at the workshop itself, provided seats are available.

For more, see STEPS Information, Pricing, and Registration Policies. You can also contact IT Training & Education staff.
