Using the Oncourse CL Original Test and Survey tool, how do I link to the Gradebook?

Note: As of December 2008, letter grades in Gradebook are referred to as non-calculating grades. Non-calculating grades may be any string of text up to eight characters. If you want your grades calculated automatically, you must enter them as either points or percentages. See Changing the grade entry, type, and scale in Gradebook, How changes in the Gradebook tool affect data for previous semesters, and How changes in the Gradebook tool affect grade entry for current and future semesters.

Original Test and Survey cannot transmit non-calculating grades to the Gradebook tool.

To complete the procedures in this document, you first need to create a test using the Original Test and Survey tool. For more information, see Oncourse CL Original Test and Survey tool: Overview.

To link a quiz or test to the Gradebook, create an entry for it in the Gradebook:

  1. From the menubar on the left, click Gradebook.

  2. At the top center, click Add Gradebook Item.

  3. On the next page, enter a title and a gradebook item point value (for points gradebooks) or a relative weight (for percentage gradebooks). You may also enter a due date, but it is not required.

Note: For points gradebooks, the gradebook point value must match the total point value for the test or quiz. If these do not match, the grades may be incorrectly calculated. For percentage gradebooks, the relative weight may be any value; see How changes in the Gradebook tool affect grade entry for current and future semesters.

  4. Use the checkboxes to choose to release the item to students or to include this item when calculating the final grade.

  5. Click Add Item.

After creating the entry for the test in the Gradebook, go to the Original Test and Survey tool and follow these steps:

  1. Select your test from the drop-down menu, and click Go.

  2. Under "Test Menu", click Settings Menu.

  3. Click Gradebook Settings.

  4. If you have set up the test to allow multiple submissions, you may choose to use the highest score or the average score.

  5. From the "Gradebook" drop-down menu, choose Oncourse CL Gradebook.

  6. From the "Assignment" drop-down menu, choose the assignment that you created to link this test or quiz to.

  7. Click Save.

To remove a link to a Gradebook item, repeat the above steps, but in step 5, choose  -- None --  from the drop-down menu, and then click Save.

Note: If you link more than one test or quiz to the same gradebook item in the Gradebook, the most recently linked test will show. The two scores will not be averaged.
