At IU, what types of visualization consulting does the AVL offer?
The Advanced Visualization Lab (AVL) at Indiana University offers a variety of consulting services:
-
Software consulting: AVL staff can help you
optimize the use of your current software, or identify a better
application or suite of tools for your needs. The AVL can also assist
with data translation tasks, as well as application customization
through custom scripts, macros, or plug-ins.
-
Software development: If no available
applications meet the visualization needs of a specific project, the
AVL offers limited custom software development. In the past, this has
led to the creation of custom applications for volume rendering,
molecular visualization, phylogenetic tree viewing, anthropometric
facial analysis, categorical information data visualization, and
architectural simulations.
-
Facility access and training: Most of the
facilities and technologies the AVL manages are available at no cost
to members of the IU community 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Some
systems are available for off-site use, and may be borrowed. AVL staff
can work with you to get access, and ensure you are capable of using
these systems.
-
Hardware installation: Collaborators are
generally encouraged to use existing visualization facilities, but if
necessary, AVL staff can offer help creating or installing your own
(perhaps specialized) visualization hardware.
- Grant and large project planning: AVL staff can help assess if and how visualization can aid your project. Staff also can help prepare specific requirements for internal or external grant proposals. To maximize the potential of AVL contributions, potential collaborators are encouraged to contact the AVL as early as possible.
