What is a distributed storage service, and what services are available at IU?
In a distributed storage service, the hardware and software infrastructure that provides the service is geographically distributed, without being apparent to the user. Indiana University currently provides two distributed services for general research-oriented long-term storage: the Scholarly Data Archive (SDA) and the Research File System (RFS):
- Use the SDA if your project requires large-scale storage (tens or
hundreds of gigabytes or more) arranged in large files
(more than 50 to 100 MB) that you access relatively infrequently
(i.e., archival or near-line storage).
- Use the RFS to store frequently accessed data (in the form of either small or large files) from a variety of environments at IU, or from your personal workstation (running Windows, Mac OS X, or Unix). The RFS is also intended for projects requiring collaboration and data sharing.
Graduate students, faculty, and staff can use the Slashtmp service to temporarily store and share large files via a web interface.
