In Microsoft Office 2007, what is XPS?

Microsoft Office 2007 can use a new file format for documents called the XML Paper Specification (XPS). This file format is similar to Adobe's PDF format.

Like PDF, XPS preserves a document's appearance by describing its format and content in a software- and device-independent way. XPS is available as a free download for any Microsoft Office product. An XPS viewer is installed in Windows Vista by default, and is available for Windows XP as part of the .NET Framework 3.0.

XPS documents can be digitally signed, and support Rights Management Services (RMS) for additional security and protection. XPS documents can print much faster and with a larger range of color information than some other file formats. For more information on the uses and features of XPS documents, see Microsoft's XPS documents web site.
