At IU, how do I update the ArcGIS license file?

The following instructions apply if you use ArcGIS on a computer that is not connected to the Indiana University network and are running your own license service. You will need administrative rights to your computer. Assuming you have already installed the ArcGIS license manager, to update or reload your ArcGIS license file:

  1. Confirm that you have received the ArcGIS license file from a GIS Support Specialist, and that you have saved it to your computer. You should have received this file via email when you bought or renewed your ArcGIS license. If you cannot locate it, email a GIS Support Specialist.

  2. If you are using an ESRI sentinel key, confirm that it is plugged into your computer.

  3. From the Start menu, select All Programs, then ArcGIS, then License Manager, and finally Update License.

  4. In the Update License window, click Next.

  5. Select I received the license file by email and have saved it to disk.

  6. Click Browse and locate the ArcGIS license file. Select the file and click Open.

  7. Click Next to import the license file.

  8. You will see a license file summary; click Next.

  9. When the update is complete, click Finish.

  10. Confirm that the License Manager location is set in ArcGIS Desktop Administrator, as follows:

    1. From the Start menu, select Programs, then ArcGIS, and then Desktop Administrator.
    2. In the ArcGIS Desktop Administrator window, select the License Manager folder.
    3. The name in the text box should be the hostname of your computer. If it isn't, click Change, and then type your computer's hostname. If necessary, see At IU, using ArcGIS, how do I correct the error "Hostname entered is invalid"?
    4. Select the Availability folder. You should see a list of features with expiration dates. Confirm that the date listed has not passed. If you do not see any features listed, the license manager is not running; see the instructions below.
    5. Click OK. To close the Desktop Administrator, click OK again.

  11. Open the ArcMap application. ArcMap should open successfully.

  12. If you see a message, "The desired vendor daemon is down.", the ArcGIS license manager is not running. To start the service:

    1. From the Start menu or the desktop, right-click My Computer and select Manage.
    2. On the left, expand the Services and Applications folder, and then select Services.
    3. In the list of services, right-click ArcGIS License Manager, and then select Restart or Start (whichever is appropriate).
    4. Try opening ArcMap again.
This is document aurd in domain all.
