At IU, how can I create or join a videoconference?
Indiana University faculty or staff can create or join videoconferences using various systems.
Note: Telephone (voice-only) participants can join a videoconference, but for conference calls involving only telephone users, use the IU Conference Call Services or UniCom/Lync conference calls; see Using Lync with UniCom, how do I hold a conference call or online meeting?
For more, watch a video demonstration, contact the IU Video Help Desk at 812-856-2020, or email Videoconferencing Support.

Videoconference creation basics
IU faculty and staff can either create an ad hoc (unreserved) videoconference or reserve a Video Bridge number. For more, see the Videoconferencing How It Works page.
For an ad hoc videoconference, the conference host must choose a conference number in the following format:
22XXXX
Replace XXXX with the numbers of your choice.
For more, see the Videoconferencing How It Works page.
Creating and joining a videoconference
Using videoconferencing equipment
Use your videoconferencing unit remote control to enter the
conference number (22XXXX), and then press the green Call
button.
Using Lync
Using Lync for Windows, in the Lync search field, type the conference
number (22XXXX) followed by
@vc.iu.edu . Right-click the resulting contact and
select Start a Video Call. For a voice-only call, select
Call, and then Lync Call.
Note: If you use the IU Video Bridge technology, UITS
recommends not upgrading to Office 2013 yet. The Lync 2013 client
cannot make video calls to conferences on the IU Video Bridge (e.g.,
22xxxx@vc.iu.edu and 24xxxx@vc.iu.edu )
or direct calls to conference room systems. These calls will connect
as audio only. If you do upgrade to 2013 but still need to participate
with video in IU Video Bridge calls, you can request a Cisco Jabber Video for TelePresence (Movi) account as an
alternative.
Note: Lync for Mac and Communicator for Mac do not support the standards used by IU's videoconferencing infrastructure. Using Lync for Mac, you can call into a conference with audio only, but you can't participate in the video. UITS recommends using Jabber Video (Movi) to join a videoconference on a Mac; see below.
Using Jabber Video (Movi)
To join a conference using Jabber Video, enter the conference number
(22XXXX) in the Jabber Video address bar, and press
Enter.
Using a telephone
- Dial the Auto Attendant at 812-856-7060.
- Enter the conference number (
22XXXX) followed by the # key (e.g.,221234#).
Using non-IU systems
For videoconferencing systems at an institution that participates in the Global Dialing Scheme (GDS), direct dial using IU's GDS domestic or international institutional prefix, as follows:
- Domestic U.S.: Dial 11439, followed by the conference number.
- International: Dial 0011439, followed by the conference number.
For videoconferencing endpoints outside of IU and not registered with a participating GDS gatekeeper, create or join a conference as follows:
- Connect to the Indiana University Guest Portal at
156.56.240.9.
- Activate the touchtone keypad; typically, in a videoconferencing
room, you do this by pressing # (pound) on your
videoconferencing system control.
- Press 1, enter the conference number,
and then press # .
- Press # again to place the call.
