What is Password Gorilla, and how can I install and use it?

Password Gorilla is an open-source tool for passphrase vaulting. It is available for a variety of platforms, including Windows, Mac, and Unix systems.

Installation

  1. Go to the Password Gorilla site.

  2. Click Download and Installation to go to that section of the page.

  3. You will see a list of platforms for which Password Gorilla is available. Choose the platform that matches your system, and then follow the directions on that page for download and installation.

Note: Password Gorilla for Windows does not use an installation program. Right-click Password Gorilla, and then select Save As... to save the executable file (the Password Gorilla program itself) to your system in a location you can remember.

Creating a database

  1. Start Password Gorilla. The program will prompt you to open a database; click Cancel.

Note: Password Gorilla can use databases created through Password Safe. If you already have an existing Password Safe database, it can be opened with this program as well. See What is Password Safe, and how can I install and use it?

  2. In the main window, click File, and then New. You will be prompted to choose a master password for the database. Enter a secure passphrase in both fields, and then click OK.

  3. To add an entry to the database, from the menu bar, click Login, and then select Add Login... .

  4. For each entry, you can provide the following information:

    • Group: This is a single name for organizing multiple entries.
    • Title: This is a descriptive name for the entry.
    • URL: This is the location of the password- or passphrase-protected site.
    • Username
    • Password: This is the password or passphrase to be stored.
    • Notes

When you have finished the entry, click OK.

  5. To save the database, from the menu bar, click File, and then select Save As... . Enter a filename and location.

Using Password Gorilla

To use Password Gorilla to log into a web site or service:

  1. Open the web site or service to which you need to log in.

  2. Place the cursor in the form's "Username:" field.

  3. Open Password Gorilla, and then select a passphrase entry.

  4. Right-click the selected entry, choose Copy Username to Clipboard, and then paste it in the "Username:" field. Repeat this step to copy and paste the passphrase to the appropriate field.

For more detailed information about using Password Gorilla, see the help documentation within the program or visit the Password Gorilla help site.
