What is KeePass, and how can I install and use it?
KeePass is a tool for passphrase vaulting. It is available for most Windows platforms, and has unofficial versions for other popular systems.
Installation
- Go to the KeePass
Downloads site.
- In the "Latest Stable Release" section, click either
Download Latest Stable Release for WindowsorDownload C++ Source Code.Note: If you want to use KeePass for a non-Windows system, you can choose the appropriate link from the "Contributed/Unofficial KeePass Ports and Builds" section.
- On the following page, choose one of the three download packages
available, and install it on your computer according to the
directions below:
- KeePass-X.XXx.zip : This is the binary ZIP package (portable version) of KeePass. There is no need to install it; instead, unpack it with a packer program (e.g., WinZip) and it is ready for use.
- KeePass-X.XXx-Setup.exe : This is a Windows installer package. Download or run the program, and follow its instructions to install KeePass onto your computer.
- KeePass-X.XXx-Src.zip : This is the full source code for KeePass. It includes all code needed to compile the program.
Creating a database
- Start KeePass. From the
Filemenu, selectNew Database. Alternatively, you can click the leftmost button in the toolbar.
- You will be prompted to enter a master key or password for the
database. Enter a secure passphrase, and then re-enter
it when prompted. Click
OK.Note: You will need this passphrase to decrypt the database.
- To add an entry to the database, from the toolbar, click
Add Entry(with an image of a gold key and a green arrow).
- For each entry, you will have to provide the following
information:
- Group: Select the group in which you want to store the entry.
- Title: This is a descriptive name for the entry.
- Username
- URL: This is the location of the password- or passphrase-protected site.
- Password: This is the password or passphrase to be stored.
- Notes
The "Quality:" field depicts the strength of your chosen passphrase. When you have finished the entry, click
OK. - To save the database, from the toolbar, click
Save(with an image of a disk). Enter a name and location for the database.
Using KeePass
To use the KeePass Auto-Type feature to enter username and passphrase information quickly and easily:
- Open the web site or service you need to log into.
- Place the cursor in the form's "Username:" field.
- Open KeePass, and then select a passphrase entry.
- To enter the username and passphrase, either type
Ctrl-vor right-click the selected entry and then choosePerform Auto-Type.
