At IU, how can I stage my files on the SDA so they'll be available when I want them?
Normally, when you retrieve a file from the Scholarly Data Archive (SDA) at Indiana University, it is first transferred (staged) from tape to a disk cache; the file is transferred to you from the copy on disk. If you want to retrieve your SDA files more quickly at a later date, you can stage it to disk ahead of time. Your file might still be removed from disk if you wait too long and the system is busy.
You can use the Hierarchical Storage Interface (HSI)
stage command to stage your files. To run
stage in the background, enter:
Replace filename with the name of your file.
To wait for the stage to finish (i.e., run the command in the foreground), enter:
stage -w filename
You can also use Kerberized FTP or pftp_client if you're
willing to wait for the stage to finish. To do this, enter:
Once initiated, the site stage command will always
complete. If you do not want to wait for it to finish, you must abort
the command.
