Webmail pilot: New features and known limitations

Note: The following information pertains solely to the pilot project for the new Webmail interface that UITS is developing. For information about the current (i.e., production) Indiana University Webmail interface, see Features of IU Webmail.

UITS is testing a new version of the Webmail interface for Cyrus email accounts, featuring several improvements over the existing Webmail interface. As part of this testing, UITS has initiated a pilot project allowing users to sign up and use the new interface. For more, see Information about the Webmail pilot project.

Because the test interface is still under development (i.e., a beta version), changes may happen frequently, and some features will not be available at the beginning of the pilot. UITS will update this page as features are added or removed from the test interface during the development process.

New features

The new version includes a modern interface in the style of many popular stand-alone email clients, such as Microsoft Outlook and Mozilla Thunderbird, as well as popular web-based clients, such as Hotmail, Gmail, and Yahoo. The new Webmail interface includes a multi-tabbed email layout for easy switching between open emails, and a variety of options that are integrated into the main message view.

Known limitations

  • Multiple identities cannot be created.

  • Address book synchronization is not yet implemented (i.e., data from your Webmail address book will not be available from the beta version)

  • Email filtering rules (i.e., anti-spam, vacation, forwarding, and custom rules) cannot be set up.

Note: Though you will not be able to set new rules, the beta interface will honor the rules you create(d) in the current Webmail interface. To create a new rule, or edit or delete an existing rule, you must do so from the current Webmail interface; see At IU, how can I filter my incoming Cyrus mail?

  • Browsers other than Firefox and Internet Explorer are not yet supported.

If the above features are necessities to you, you may want to refrain from participating in the pilot. Once testing is complete and UITS moves the new interface into production, all features of the current Webmail interface will be available.
