About the Steel retirement

The Steel cluster, purchased in March 2003, has reached the end of its hardware life cycle. Steel became read-only on Monday, June 23, 2008.

Note the following about the Steel retirement:

  • Quarry, Indiana University's newest supercomputer, provides a general-purpose Unix computing environment for academic and instructional use. For more, see the Quarry home page.

  • The web hosting service, Mypage, moved from Steel to Mercury, a virtual server environment managed by UITS. There is no web hosting service on Quarry.

  • No Steel accounts were migrated to Quarry.

  • Steel accounts that were using Mypage services were migrated to Mercury, the new Mypage server. If you were not using Steel for basic web hosting, your account was not migrated.

Important: If your web pages include absolute URLs (e.g., /N/fs2/username/Steel/www or /N/u/username/Steel/www), they will not work in the new environment. For help changing them, see About the Mypage migration.

  • The Mypage move did not affect existing web page URLs, which continue to follow the format: http://mypage.iu.edu/~username/
  • The Mypage service is still limited to basic web serving.

  • The Mercury environment does not provide general Unix computing. In particular, note that outbound mail is not available on Mercury.
