About the STC maintenance window
The highly distributed nature of the Student Technology Center (STC) computing environment brings with it the need to respond to the instructional needs of faculty and students as well as the security needs of Indiana University on a daily basis. To address this need without interfering with classroom instruction or daytime study hours, the STCs operate a nightly maintenance window.
This maintenance window begins every evening at 10pm (15 minutes after the last class of the day lets out) and ends at 7am. Normally, you will not experience any interruption of service during this period. However, if you are working late at night you may be asked to save your work and log out while the workstation reboots. No other service interruption should be expected.
When necessary, security updates may also be applied to Windows
STC workstations during the nightly maintenance window. On occasion,
these updates will inform you that the system needs to
reboot. You must usually click OK before the
reboot proceeds. Make sure to save your work before
granting permission for the system to reboot.
On a rare occasion, the need to perform maintenance on an STC service may require a service outage in the STCs. To minimize the impact of such an outage, Sunday mornings from 6am-10am are reserved for the maintenance of central systems which support the STCs. Generally, during this maintenance window, central STC services may be intermittent but outages will not be widespread. Such maintenance will be scheduled in advance, usually when classes are not in session, and will be announced on IT Notices.
For further information about the STCs or STC maintenance procedures, see STC standards and practices or visit Student Technology Centers.
