ARCHIVED: On Big Red, can I retrieve files lost on GPFS?
If you use Big Red, you have access to 266TB of shared scratch space using GPFS (General Parallel File System). Because GPFS is a scratch directory (i.e., files are not backed up), you cannot retrieve data that is lost or deleted. UITS recommends that you make regular backups of data stored in scratch directories.
For an online data storage system that is backed up regularly, use HPSS on Indiana University's Scholarly Data Archive (SDA); see At IU, how can I apply for an account on the SDA or RFS? TeraGrid users are also eligible for space on IU HPSS; see ARCHIVED: On the TeraGrid, how do I request HPSS space at IU?
