ARCHIVED: In Office Communicator, how do I change my preferred calling device?
At Indiana University, the Office Communicator client for Windows still works with the UniCom service, but Windows users are encouraged to download the new Lync client instead. See About the UniCom Lync deployment.

Indiana University's UniCom service offers three configurations; see IU UniCom feature comparison. These directions apply only to one configuration, UniCom with Telephone Integration. If you use UniCom Basic or UniCom Enterprise Voice, your only choice for your preferred calling device will be Computer.
Most people using UniCom with Telephone Integration will probably want to change the preferred calling device from Phone to Computer; the following table summarizes the differences between the two options.
| Computer | Phone |
|---|---|
| Recommended setting if you have a headset | Use this setting if you want to use features like the speakerphone. |
| Can answer incoming calls on either desk phone or using Office Communicator | Can only answer incoming calls on your desk phone |
| Can either use Office Communicator to make calls using your headset or use your desk phone as usual | Can use either your phone or Office Communicator to make calls, but outgoing Office Communicator calls will cause your phone to ring. Pick up the phone to complete the call. |
The default initial setting is Phone. To change the preferred calling device:
- In the Office Communicator window, place your mouse over the Phone
icon to the right of any contact, and click the drop-down arrow next to
the icon that appears.
- In the "Preferred Calling Device:" field, select either
ComputerorPhone.
Changing the preferred calling device for one contact will change it for all your contacts; until you change it again, all calls will now be initiated with the calling device you have specified.
