How do Small Stata, Stata/IC, Stata/SE, and Stata/MP differ?
In terms of the number of observations and variables allowed, the major differences among various versions of Stata are:
- Small Stata is limited to analyzing datasets with a maximum of 99 variables on approximately 1,200 observations. At most, you can use 99 right-hand-side variables in a model.
- Stata/IC (intercooled or standard) allows datasets with as many as 2,047 variables. The number of observations is limited only by the amount of RAM in your computer. At most, you can use 798 right-hand-side variables in a model.
- Stata/SE (special edition) and Stata/MP (multiprocessor) allow datasets with up to 32,767 variables. The number of observations is limited only by the amount of RAM in your computer. At most, you can use 10,998 right-hand-side variables in a model.
Stata/SE is available in all UITS Windows Student Technology Centers (STCs) on the Indiana University Bloomington and IUPUI campuses. Stata/SE and Stata/MP are available on the Quarry Unix cluster.
For more about Stata, visit the Stata support page. For assistance with Stata at IU, visit Stata's Resources and support.
For more about statistical and mathematical software, email the UITS Stat/Math Center, visit the center's web page, or phone 812-855-4724 (IUB) or 317-278-4740 (IUPUI). The center is located in Bloomington at 410 N. Park Avenue, and is open for consultation by appointment Monday-Friday 9am-5pm.
