Reading your Imail or Umail mail using a desktop email client

Both Imail and Umail support connections from email clients using the IMAP protocol.

Imail

To configure your email client to read your Imail email, use the following settings:

  • Username: Use username@imail.iu.edu (replace username with your Imail username, which should be the same as your Network ID username).

  • Password: Use your Windows Live password (not your Network ID passphrase).

  • IMAP server: Use IMAP.exchangelabs.com .

  • SMTP server: Use smtp.exchangelabs.com .

  • SSL: Specify Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) for incoming (IMAP) connections.

  • TLS: Specify Transport Layer Security (TLS) encryption for outgoing (SMTP) connections.

Note: Use the same username and password to authenticate with the SMTP server. Do not select Secure Password Authentication.

For complete instructions on configuring supported email clients, see Microsoft's Connect to My Exchange Labs E-mail page under "E-mail programs that support POP and IMAP".

Umail

Note: Some users have reported problems accessing their Umail inboxes via IMAP due to authentication errors. If you cannot access your inbox after completing the steps below:

To read your Umail email from an email client, you must first enable IMAP in Umail:

  1. Log into Umail.

  2. At the top of any Umail page, click Settings.

  3. Click Forwarding and POP/IMAP.

  4. Next to "IMAP Access", select Enable IMAP.

  5. Click Save Changes.

Once you've enabled IMAP in Umail, configure your email client to read your Umail email using the instructions from Google. Instead of  username@gmail.com , enter  username@umail.iu.edu  for your email address.

Note: Use the same username and password to authenticate with the SMTP server. Do not select Secure Password Authentication.
