ARCHIVED: What is BIRN?

Researchers collaborating in the Biomedical Informatics Research Network (BIRN) are using TeraGrid resources to map specific structural differences in patients' brains to help identify brain disorders, such as Alzheimers.

Researches used TeraGrid resources and the Large Deformation Diffeomorphic Metric Mapping (LDDMM) tool at the Center for Imaging Science (CIS) at Johns Hopkins University to study brain scan data from 101 subjects. The mapping tool identifies differences in the shape of brain structures, allowing researchers to compare differences between subjects. The necessary computations required some 130,000 CPU hours on TeraGrid resources at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) and San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC).

For more, see the BIRN portal.
