ARCHIVED: At IU, how do I log into an administrative system with my SafeWord card?

The instructions for logging into administrative systems at Indiana University vary slightly depending on the mode in which your SafeWord card operates. There are two modes: challenge/response and synchronous. The system you are using will know which mode your card is using, and will behave accordingly. See ARCHIVED: For SafeWord cards at IU, what is the difference between challenge/response mode and synchronous mode?

Follow the directions below. If you have problems, contact your departmental SafeWord Card Coordinator, or email  swadmin@iupui.edu  or  safeword@iu.edu .

  1. At the system login screen, enter your Network ID username and passphrase, and then press Enter.

  2. On your SafeWord card, press the ON button.

  3. If your card reads "EP" (for "Enter PIN") or "ENTR PIN", enter your four-digit PIN on the SafeWord card keypad. This is a protected field; as you enter your PIN, you will see hyphens instead of the actual digits. Do not press ENTER.

If your card does not require a PIN, you will not see one of these prompts. Instead, your card will display a six-character code. Type this code onto the authentication screen, press Enter, and then proceed to step 5 below.

  4. If your card then prompts you with "ECH" or "0", it is in challenge/response mode. Continue with the following steps:

    • When your card reads "ECH" or "0", enter the four-digit challenge from the system into the SafeWord card. Press ENTER on the card.

    • Your card will display an eight-character code. Type the first four leftmost characters from the card onto the authentication screen, and then press Enter.

If your card does not prompt you for a challenge, it is in synchronous mode. Continue with this step:

    • Your card will display a six-character code. Type this code onto the authentication screen, and then press Enter.

  5. When the system indicates that your authentication was successful, you can turn off your SafeWord card.
