ARCHIVED: How do I use BlackBerry Enterprise Messenger?

Note: BlackBerry Enterprise Messenger service is no longer available for accessing IU UniCom.

On this page:

At Indiana University, you can use BlackBerry Enterprise Messenger to access the UniCom service on your BlackBerry. (The software's full name is BlackBerry Client for Instant Messaging for Microsoft Office Communications Server.)

Important: If you are logged into Office Communicator on more than one computer or device (e.g., your workstation as well as your BlackBerry, or a computer on your desk and another in a meeting room or at home), instant messages sent to you may appear only on the one the system perceives as active (typically the last one you used). Thus, you may wish to log out of Office Communicator on computers or devices you are not actively using.

Logging in

  1. From the home screen, click the Enterprise Messenger icon.

  2. The login screen will appear.

    • Sign-in name: Enter your full IU email address (e.g., dvader@indiana.edu ).
    • User name: Enter ads\yourusername (for example, ads\dvader ).
    • Password: Enter your IU passphrase.

Below the Sign In button, you will see three checkboxes:

    • Save Password: If you want Enterprise Messenger to remember your password, leave this checked. Otherwise, deselect this option by selecting it, clicking the wheel or trackball, and then selecting Change Option.
    • Automatically log me on: This automatically logs you in each time you turn on your device. Otherwise, deselect this option by selecting it, clicking the wheel or trackball, and then selecting Change Option.
    • Use custom login status: Leave this checked if you want Enterprise Messenger to log you in with the default status set by your desktop Office Communicator client. Otherwise, deselect this option by selecting it, clicking the wheel or trackball, and then selecting Change Option.

  3. Click Sign In.

Sending an instant message

After you have signed into Enterprise Messenger, you will see the contacts list you created on your desktop Office Communicator client. To send an instant message to someone already in your contacts list:

  1. Scroll to and click the name of the intended recipient.

  2. From the menu that appears, select Send IM.

  3. A new window will open with the message text field at the bottom. Type your message and either press the Enter key or click the wheel or trackball and select Send.

  4. When you are finished with the instant message conversation, click the wheel or trackball and select End Conversation.

To send an instant message to someone not in your contacts list:

  1. Click the wheel or trackball anywhere on the screen. From the resulting menu, click Send IM to Other... .

  2. A small dialog box will appear. Begin entering the display name or username of the recipient. Another small window with several lines will appear as you type. One of the lines will read "Lookup:" and will contain the text you are entering.

If you are not certain of the display or user name, enter as much as you can, and then select Lookup: (display or username of the person you're looking up) and click the wheel or trackball. Enterprise Messenger will resolve what you've entered against the Exchange Global Address List (GAL) and return the closest matches. Scroll and click the one you were searching for, and then select Continue. You will be returned to the small dialog box with the recipient's name completed for you.

    Click OK.

  3. A new window will open with the message text field at the bottom. Type your message and either press the Enter key or click the wheel or trackball and select Send.

  4. When you are finished with the instant message conversation, click the wheel or trackball and select End Conversation.

To log out of the Communications server, click the wheel or trackball anywhere on your contacts list and select Sign Out.

Changing your status

To change your status after you're logged into BlackBerry Enterprise Messenger:

  1. Click the wheel or trackball anywhere on the contacts list, and select My Status.

  2. Choose the status you want to set:

    • Busy
    • Do Not Disturb
    • Be Right Back
    • Away

Note: You can also set Personal Notes (e.g., a description of what you're doing, a title description, a famous quote), or a Custom Status.
