At IU, how do I install the TSM client software in Windows?
To obtain server backups through the Indiana University Intelligent Infrastructure, install the Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) client package on the server, as described below. After you have completed the installation, submit the backup request form. When your request has been approved, you will receive a TSM node name and password for your server, which will allow you to complete the configuration process. Once you have successfully completed the configuration and your server is talking with the TSM server, email the TSM administrator to have your server associated with a backup schedule.
To install the TSM client software:
- Get the TSM client package from IUware. (If not
already selected, in the upper left, click
Windows. Then, on the left under "Software", selectUtilities.) Select the client package appropriate for the operating system and version running on your server.
- Execute the package
x.x.x.x-TIV-TSMBAC-WinX32/64.exe. During the installation, you will be prompted to choose the setup type; chooseTypical. You will also be prompted for the location to install TSM; if you choose the defaults, it will install inC:\Program Files\Tivoli\TSM.
- Go to
Start > Programs > Tivoli Storage Manager > Backup Archive GUI.
- If this is a new install, the TSM Client Configuration Wizard
will start. Follow the instructions to create a
dsm.optfile, or to edit thedsm.optfile if you already have one saved.
- Use the following parameters to configure your client:
- TSM node name: Name provided by your TSM administrator
- Communication method: TCP/IP
-
TSM server TCP/IP address:
tsmbl01.uits.indiana.edu(for IU Bloomington) ortsmin01.uits.iupui.edu(for IUPUI) - TSM server port: 1500
Accept the defaults on the recommended include/exclude list and the common file exclusion selection.
In the
Domain for backupwindow, chooseIncrementalfor the backup type, and checkBackup all local file systems.Click

dsm.optfile, located atC:\Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\baclient\dsm.opt, and add the following two lines if they don't already exist: PASSWORDACCESS GENERATE SUBDIR YES - Go to
Start > Programs > Tivoli Storage Manager > Backup Archive GUI. When prompted, enter the password provided by the TSM administrator.
- From the
Utilitiesmenu, selectSetup Wizard to Configure a TSM Client Scheduler. CheckHelp me configure the TSM client scheduler. - Enter the name

- From the
You should see TSM Scheduler and TSM Acceptor
services in Administrative Tools > Computer
Management > Services and Applications > Services
(scroll down until you see them). The TSM Acceptor will be started,
but TSM Scheduler will be stopped.
TSM Acceptor communicates with the TSM Server to determine when the next backup schedule is to run. At that time it will start the TSM Scheduler, which will actually run the schedule. When the schedule is finished, TSM Acceptor will stop the TSM Scheduler. If the scheduler needs a restart, only the TSM Acceptor needs to be restarted.
Check your schedule by opening dsmc.exe
(C:\Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\baclient\dsmc.exe ).
Enter q sched to see when your backup is scheduled. Type
quit to exit.
Check the dsmsched.log file (you can open it using
Notepad). If you have any errors, contact the TSM
administrator. Otherwise, all server backups are monitored
automatically, and you will be alerted via email if problems occur.
Check your dsmerror.log file to diagnose problems with
your backups. The dsmsched.log and
dsmerror.log files contain, respectively, a full summary
of what files were and were not backed up, and a list of any problems
or failures encountered during the backup.
