ARCHIVED: At IU, how do I install the TSM client software in Mac OS X?

The TSM environment at Indiana University uses closed registration; before you can connect to the TSM server, you must register with the TSM server by filling out the backup request form. Once you have succesfuly registered your server with TSM, you will receive a node name and the password for your client node.

  1. Download and install Tivoli Storage Manager as follows:

    1. Download the TSM client from: ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/storage/tivoli-storage-management/maintenance/client/v5r5/

If you are using Mac OS X Tiger (10.4.7), select v5r4. If you are using Mac OS X Leopard (10.5), select v5r5.

    2. Select the Mac folder and then select the most recent revision available.
    3. Download the .dmg file (e.g., 5.5.0.6-TIV-TSMBAC-Mac.dmg) to your desktop.
    4. On your desktop, double-click the .dmg file to mount the disk image, and then open Tivoli Storage Manager.mpkg.
    5. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the installation.
    6. Once you have installed the software, unmount (eject) the disk image and move the .dmg file to the trash.

  2. Run the TSM Client Configuration Wizard as follows:

    1. Open /Applications/Tivoli Storage Manager/TSM Tools for Administrators.app.

Note: This application will enable you to run Tivoli Storage Manager.app as root and will also set up the client acceptor daemon to launch upon startup.

    2. Select Tivoli Storage Manager from the list and click OK.
    3. Authenticate with an administrator username and password.

Tivoli Storage Manager.app will open and automatically start the TSM Client Configuration Wizard.

    4. In the Options File Task panel, select Create a new options file. Click Next.
    5. In the TSM Server Name panel, type TSMBL01 (for IUB) or TSMIN01 (for IUPUI). Click Next.
    6. In the TSM Client/Server Communications panel, select TCP/IP. Click Next.
    7. In the Communication Parameters panel, type tsmbl01.uits.indiana.edu (for IUB) or tsmin01.uits.iupui.edu (for IUPUI). Click Next.

Note: Leave the default port at 1500.

    8. In the TSM Authentication panel, type the node name sent to you after registration and click Next.
    9. In the Completing the TSM Client Configuration Wizard panel, click Finish.
    10. From the Edit menu, select Client Preferences.
    11. In the TSM Login dialog box, type the password sent to you after registration and click Login.
    12. In the Preferences Editor window, select the Authorization tab on the left.
    13. In the Authorization Preferences panel, select Password Generate. Click OK.
    14. From the File menu, select Exit.

  3. Create include-exclude files as follows:

Note: For more information on include-exclude lists, see "Creating an include-exclude list (optional root user or authorized user task)" in the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for Macintosh: Backup-Archive Clients Installation and User Guides.

    1. Open /Applications/TextEdit.app .
    2. From the Format menu, select Make Plain Text.

Note: If Make Rich Text is listed instead, then the document is already in plain text mode.

    3. Copy and paste the following statements into TextEdit.

Note: System files that cannot be recovered without possibly corrupting the operating system or temporary files with data that are easily recreated should be excluded. The following exclude statements are the ones recommended by IBM.

      EXCLUDE"/.../Norton FileSaver Data" EXCLUDE"/.../Norton VolumeSaver Data" EXCLUDE"/.../Norton VolumeSaver Index" EXCLUDE"/.../TSM Sched*" EXCLUDE"/.../TSM Error*" EXCLUDE/.../.hotfiles.bTree EXCLUDE.DIR/private/tmp EXCLUDE.DIR/private/var/vm EXCLUDE.DIR/private/var/tmp EXCLUDE.DIR/private/var/db/netinfo/local.nidb EXCLUDE.DIR/.../.Trashes EXCLUDE.DIR/.../.Trash EXCLUDE.DIR/.../.Spotlight-* EXCLUDE.DIR/.../.TemporaryItems EXCLUDE.DIR/.../Library/Caches EXCLUDE.DIR/.../.fseventsd EXCLUDE.DIR/.../Backups.backupdb EXCLUDE.DIR/Trash EXCLUDE.DIR/TheVolumeSettingsFolder EXCLUDE.DIR"/Temporary Items" EXCLUDE.DIR/Users/.../Library/Caches EXCLUDE.DIR"/System Folder/Preferences/netscape A/Cache" EXCLUDE.DIR"/System Folder/Preferences/Explorer/Temporary Files" EXCLUDE.DIR"/System Folder/Preferences/cache-cache" EXCLUDE.DIR"/SystemFolder/Preferences/netscapeusers/.../Cache"
    4. Save the file to /Library/Preferences/Tivoli Storage Manager/default.excl .

Note: Be sure to set the Plain Text Encoding option to Unicode (UTF-16) and to uncheck the If no extension is provided, use '.txt' option. This method ensures that statements that include Unicode characters will be processed.

    5. Additional include-exclude files may be created to include or exclude specific files or directories. If necessary, create other files in the same manner.
    6. Quit TextEdit.

  4. Set backup, include-exclude, and other preferences as follows:

    1. Open /Applications/Tivoli Storage Manager/TSM Tools for Administrators.app .
    2. Select Tivoli Storage Manager from the list. Click OK.
    3. Authenticate with an administrator username and password.
    4. In the TSM Login dialog box, type the password sent to you after registration. Click Login.

Note: Because the Password Generate option was selected above, your password will now be saved for future use.

    5. From the Edit menu, select Client Preferences.
    6. In the Preferences Editor window, select the Backup tab on the left.
    7. In the "Domain for Backup: section, uncheck any volumes that do not need to be backed up.

Note: In general, you should only back up volumes that contain critical data.

    8. In the Preferences Editor window, select the Include-Exclude tab on the left.
    9. Click the Add button.
    10. In the Define Include-Exclude Options window, set the Category to Include Exclude File and the Type to INCLEXCL.
    11. In the "File or Pattern" field, type /Library/Preferences/Tivoli Storage Manager/backup.excl , or click the Browse button and select the backup.excl file using the Finder. Click OK.
    12. If you created other include-exclude files above, then add them in the same manner.
    13. If necessary, move the default.excl statement to the bottom of the list using the arrow buttons.

Note: Include-exclude statements are processed from bottom to top. In general, the default.excl file should be last in the statement list so that the files it excludes are excluded from all subsequent statements.

    14. If necessary, select other tabs on the left to set any other preferences.
    15. Click OK to save the preferences.
    16. From the File menu, select Exit to exit Tivoli Storage Manager.

  5. Start the Client Acceptor Daemon as follows:

    1. Open /Applications/Tivoli Storage Manager/TSM Tools for Administrators.app.
    2. Select Start the Client Acceptor Daemon from the list. Click OK.
    3. Read the message and click OK.
    4. Authenticate with an administrator username and password.
    5. Read the message and click OK.
    6. To verify that the client knows about its schedule, from Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app run dsmc query schedule .
