How do I install BlackBerry Enterprise Messenger?
At Indiana University, you can use BlackBerry Enterprise Messenger to access the UniCom service on your BlackBerry. (The software's full name is BlackBerry Client for Instant Messaging for Microsoft Office Communications Server.)
Note: At IU, configure your BlackBerry Enterprise Server account on your BlackBerry before downloading BlackBerry Enterprise Messenger; see About the IU BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) and BES accounts.
Installation
- Since the BlackBerry Enterprise Messenger can be installed only on
devices running BlackBerry device software versions 4.1 or above,
verify the version on your device.
To determine the version of your device software, go to Options from the main menu, and choose
About. One of the lines on the screen will display the version number (e.g., "v.4.2.x.xx").If you need to update, see For a BlackBerry at IU, what software do I need and where do I get it?
- On your BlackBerry, open the web browser and go to:
https://accountmgmt.exchange.iu.edu/bbocs2007/
Note: The Go To dialog will provide
http://wwwas the default starting text; delete this, and then enter the URL exactly as shown above. - On the resulting page, below the text "BlackBerry Client for use
with Microsoft(R) Office Communications Server 2007(TM)", will be a
link to download the BlackBerry Client for Microsoft Office
Communications Server 2007. Click the link to begin the download.
- Another screen will list details such as the name of the software,
version number, vendor, and size. At the bottom of that text, click
Download.
- Once the download is complete, a message about successful
installation will display. Click
OK.
BlackBerry Enterprise Messenger should now be installed and ready to use. For login and other instructions, see How do I use BlackBerry Enterprise Messenger?
Additional instructions for the BlackBerry Bold
After the above steps, the Bold may require a restart. Also, note that
it places the BlackBerry Enterprise Messenger application in the
Downloads folder. To move the icon to the main menu:
- From the Home screen menu, select
Downloads. You should see the Enterprise Messenger application here.
- Highlight
Enterprise Messenger. Then pressMenuand selectMove To Folder, thenHome.
Installation troubleshooting
If you experience problems installing BlackBerry Enterprise Messenger, check the following:
- Ensure you are not using the MediaNet browser, but are instead
using the BlackBerry, or the "internet", browser. UITS has received
reports that the MediaNet browser fails when following these
instructions. The MediaNet browser normally identifies itself as such,
so if you do not see it on your home screen, it most likely isn't
installed or is hidden.
- Ensure that the browser is identifying itself as a BlackBerry
browser, and not emulating some other browser. To do this:
- Launch the browser.
- Click either the trackwheel (on older model BlackBerries) or the
BlackBerry key, and then select
Options. - Select
Browser Configuration. - Next to "Emulation Mode", make sure the setting reads
BlackBerry. If it does not, click the trackwheel or the BlackBerry button to change the option.Note: On newer models, such as the BlackBerry Bold, the setting is
Browser Identification, not Emulation Mode.
- After you change browser settings, clear the cache and cookies before attempting installation again. See How do I clear the cache in my BlackBerry Browser?
