At IU, how do I install ERDAS IMAGINE 11.0?

The installation of ERDAS IMAGINE 11.0 is a two-step process. ERDAS Foundation 11.0, a component bundle used in all ERDAS products, must be installed prior to installing ERDAS IMAGINE 11.0. ERDAS Foundation 11.0 is a uniform, prerequisite installer that includes ERDAS-Net Licensing, which is used across the ERDAS product lines. You must have full administrative privileges in Windows to install a license file or add remote license servers. The Indiana University license agreement with ERDAS provides only floating licenses; node-locked licenses are not supported.

To install ERDAS IMAGINE 11.0, perform the following steps in order:

Uninstall previous versions of ERDAS IMAGINE

  1. From the Start menu, click ERDAS or ERDAS 2010, and then launch the Install Manager.

  2. Remove each item in the list, starting with the last installed item.

  3. Reboot the system after removing the last item.

UITS recommends that you connect to its managed ERDAS central license service when installing; to do this, proceed to the following section. If you instead wish to connect to a local license service, skip to Local license service for laptop or home computer.

UITS-managed ERDAS central license service for use on the IU network

  1. If your computer is located off campus, first connect to the IU VPN.

  2. To permit license check-out, the ERDAS license server must have the hostname of all systems using the service. To provide UITS with your computer's hostname, email your hostname and your IU department name to GIS Support Specialists, with "ERDAS Central License Server hostname update" in the subject line. Use your IU email address; UITS staff will deny requests from outside of IU. The license service is case sensitive, so carefully review your system's hostname before sending it. For example, if your hostname is home-pc , the server will deny license checkout to system HOME-pc .

  3. From the Start menu, go to All Programs, then ERDAS 2011, then ERDAS-Net Licensing 2011, then License Administration, and then open ERDAS-Net License Admin Tool.

  4. In the ERDAS-Net License Admin Tool window, from the Server tab, select Add Remote Server.

  5. In the License Server Information window, in the "License Server" field, type erdas1.uits.indiana.edu . Next to "Port Number:", type 27001 . This is the primary license service that restarts early every Monday morning. Click OK.

  6. To add the backup license service, from the Server tab, select Add Remote Server.

  7. In the License Server Information window, in the "License Server" field, type erdas2.uits.indiana.edu . Next to "Port Number:", type 27001 . This service restarts daily. Click OK.

  8. To test availability of a license service, expand the License Sources and Remote Server folders and select a feature (e.g., IMAGINE Essentials). The number of licenses available will be 100 or less, depending on the number of people connected to the service. If you do not see anything listed under "Feature Properties", you are not connected to the license service.

  9. After successfully connecting to the remote license service, exit the ERDAS-Net License Admin Tool via the File menu, and then begin installing ERDAS IMAGINE 11.0.

Local license service for laptop or home computer

  1. From the Start menu, go to All Programs, then ERDAS 2011, then ERDAS-Net Licensing 2011, then License Administration, and then open ERDAS-Net License Admin Tool.

  2. In the ERDAS-Net License Admin Tool window, select System from the top menu, and then select Show SysID. The Show ERDAS-Net System ID window will open.

  3. Copy the Local Area Connection ID code or Dongle ID (available only if a dongle is attached to the computer). If you purchased an ERDAS license from UITS, email this code and your IU department name to the GIS Support Specialists, with "ERDAS 11.0 license request" in the subject line. Use your IU email address; UITS staff will deny requests from outside of IU.

Note: The system ID and license file needed for IMAGINE 10 and 11 are different than those used for IMAGINE 9.3 licensing. A 9.3 license file will not support IMAGINE 10 or 11; a 10 or 11 license file will not support IMAGINE 9.3.

The Local Area Connection ID is the system ID for the computer's network card, and is the default system ID. If you have a removable network card or are not always connected to the network, run this feature in every possible configuration (connected, disconnected, docked, undocked, etc.) so that you generate a system ID for each configuration. If you do not have a common system ID for all configurations, then you will need to use a dongle to provide a constant system ID.

  4. Once you receive the license file (.elf) by email, save it to your computer. Do not rename the file.

  5. Launch the ERDAS-Net License Admin Tool again.

  6. From the File menu, select Load license File.

  7. Click Browse and navigate to the directory where the license file is stored. Select the file, and then click Open. Click OK to confirm the license file pathway.

  8. To test the availability of a license service, expand the License Sources and Local folders, and then select a feature (e.g., IMAGINE Essentials). The number of licenses available will be at least one, depending on the number of licenses purchased from UITS. If you do not see anything listed under "Feature Properties", the license service is not running.

  9. After successfully starting a local license service, exit the ERDAS-Net License Admin Tool via the File menu, and then begin installing ERDAS IMAGINE 11.0.
