Oncourse CL Assignments Beta: Overview
Note: This document applies to Assignments Beta, a new tool in a pilot phase. For instructions for the default Assignments tool, see Assignments.
What it does
For courses, the Assignments Beta tool allows instructors to create, distribute, collect, and grade online assignments. Assignments are private; student submissions are not visible to other users of the site.
Key concepts
Multiple grading options: You can choose percent grades, points, non-calculating grades such as letter grades and pass/fail grades, or ungraded assignments.
Multiple submissions: Instructors can specify the number of submissions students can turn in for each assignment. Assignments can also be returned, with or without grades, for resubmission.
Offline grading: Instructors can download all submissions to an assignment to their computer as well as upload grades and grade comments. Grades and comments are not visible to students until the instructor has released them.
Retract Grades: Instructors can retract any grades released by mistake.
Honor pledge: This option requires students to click a checkbox affirming that they have neither given nor received aid on an assignment before they can submit it.
Things to consider
-
The quota for a course site or project site is 1GB, and the limit for individual file uploads is 200MB unless you use WebDAV. To request a larger quota for your site, see What are the default disk quotas for UITS accounts, and how do I request an increase?
- A graded assignment must be associated with a Gradebook item;
there is no separate grading capability within Assignments Beta. You
can choose to associate a new assignment with an existing Gradebook
item, or create the Gradebook item as you add the new assignment in
Assignments Beta.
- Unlike the default Assignments tool, Assignments Beta does not
have its own
Student Viewlink. However, instructors or site leaders can use the general Oncourse CL student view functionality to view assignments as they would appear to students or project participants and submit assignments as a student would. To learn more about using student view, see For instructors or site owners, viewing your course site as a student or participant.
