Using Oncourse Assignments 2, how can I download students' assignments and upload grades?
For instructions for the original Assignments tool, see Assignments.
Note: To complete these procedures, you must be assigned a role having the necessary permissions. To determine your role, follow the directions in Participant roles. To view a list of permissions associated with a given role, see Permissions, roles, and tools. For a basic understanding of roles and permissions, see Permissions and roles: Overview.

Introduction
This document explains how to download students'
work, grade it offline, and then upload a .csv file with
students' grades and comments. To grade an assignment within the Assignments 2 tool, see Grading or returning an assignment or reviewing student status in Assignments 2.
Note: The Assignments 2 tool includes a "Grade comments" text field for short comments, and a larger "Feedback" text box for more extensive comments. Using the following method, you can upload comments to the "Grade comments" field along with your grades, but not to the "Feedback" field. To use the Feedback function, grade students' assignments within the Assignments 2 tool.
If you plan to export and maintain local offline copies of any student information (including but not limited to names, University ID numbers, or grades), you are responsible for taking adequate security measures to handle and safeguard such data, as it remains sensitive university data.
The University Information Policy Office (UIPO) has more at Protecting Data.
For more on handling sensitive data, see:
Downloading assignments for offline review
To download multiple student submissions in order to review them offline:
- In the relevant course site, from the menubar, click
Assignments 2. You will see a list of assignments and their status.
- On the Assignments page, click the "In/New" number to
the right of the assignment you want to download.
- On the Submissions page, click
Download All.
- When prompted, save the
.zipfile to your hard drive, making note of the saved location.
- Find the saved
.zipfile and extract its contents. This can generally be done by right-clicking the file's icon and choosingExtract. If your operating system is not set up to manage.zipfiles, you will need some form of archiving software (e.g., 7-Zip or Stuffit Expander).
- When the files are extracted, you will see a folder labeled with
the name of the assignment and course number. Inside this folder,
you will see a folder for each student.
To read a student's work, open the folder with his or her name; it
will contain one or more folders with a name indicating the date and
time the student turned in each submission (e.g.,
20090106_0342PM). Inside each time-stamped folder is the student's work.If the assignment is associated with a Gradebook item, inside the assignment folder, you will also see a
.csvfile listing each student's username, name, grade for the assignment, and any grade comments that have been saved. You can use this to enter grades, as described in the following sections.
Adding grades, grade comments, and feedback to an assignment
- To enter (and optionally provide comments about) a grade, open the
.csvfile with Microsoft Excel or another.csveditor. Add the grade and/or comments, and then save the file. Be sure to save the file to its original location.
- To add inline comments to a student's submission text, navigate to
the
Feedbackfolder within the folder containing the student's submission text, and open the file namedannotated_submission_text.htmlwith an HTML editor. Add your comments, and then save the file.
- To edit or add comments to a student attachment, open the
attachment with the software used to create the original file, and
then make the desired changes. Save or copy the version with your
changes to the
Feedbackfolder for that submission.
- To provide rich text feedback about a student's submission, open
the
Feedbackfolder for that submission. Open the file namedfeedback.htmlwith an HTML editor, add your feedback, and save the file.
- To add feedback attachments for a student submission, put the
files you want to attach in the
Feedbackfolder for that submission.
Uploading grades, comments, and feedback for an assignment
Note: To upload feedback as well as grades and grade
comments, use a ZIP utility to compress and save the extracted folder
in .zip format. The .zip file must have the
same name as the file you originally extracted from. See In Windows, how do I compress or decompress files? or In Mac OS X, how do I compress or decompress files?
When you are finished adding grades and comments, to upload the file:
- From the menubar, click
