Using Umail, why can't I access my mail through a POP or IMAP client, or my BlackBerry?

If you have made multiple failed login attempts to Umail through any IMAP or POP client, Google's servers will automatically lock access for security reasons. When this happens, you will see the error message "Web login required (Failure)".

Additionally, if you configure Umail for your BlackBerry using your provider's IMAP configuration instructions, you may be locked out, especially if you mistakenly enter your Indiana University Network ID password instead of the vendor one. You may not always get an error message on your BlackBerry, or you may get an error that is not descriptive. However, even if you use a BlackBerry or a POP/IMAP client, you will still have mail access through https://umail.iu.edu, as the problem only occurs with POP/IMAP access.

Failed login attempts are usually due to simple problems; for example, you may have changed your Umail vendor password, but forgotten to update your email program. You may also have accidentally misconfigured other settings in your email program, and then let it try to log in for an extended period of time.

To unlock IMAP and POP services in Umail:

  1. Visit Umail's unlock CAPTCHA page.

  2. Enter your username. For example, if your Umail address is  dvader@umail.iu.edu , enter dvader .

  3. Enter your Umail password.

Note: This is not the same as your Network ID passphrase.

  4. Enter the CAPTCHA code (i.e., the letters you see in the picture) into the blank field.

  5. Click Unlock.

Once you have unlocked your account, reconfigure your email program or BlackBerry device with the correct settings and password; see Configuring a desktop email client for Imail or Umail. Then, launch the email program to make sure you can access Umail, or see if you're able to view messages on your BlackBerry.
