About IU Alumni Association email accounts

On this page:

Overview

The Indiana University Alumni Association (IUAA) offers email to current students and alumni. An alumni email account lets you maintain your connection to IU.

Important:
Alumni email is hosted by Google Workspace for education use, which is restricted in some countries, including China. Find out if Google Workspace is restricted in your country.
Note:
You can get an alumni email account even if you already have a personal Gmail account; the two accounts will not conflict.

You must log in to your alumni email account at least once every 365 days so the account is not considered dormant. If you sign up for an alumni email account, you will receive email messages from the university, but the IUAA honors requests to limit communications and solicitations.

Your IU email account won't be accessible after it's been inactivated, which happens two semesters after you graduate (including summer term). If your account is inactive, you cannot retrieve messages from your IU email account. You can forward your email to another account until your account becomes inactive, but you'll stop receiving messages (including forwarded messages) once the two semesters without enrollment are over.

Your email address

Your alumni email address is username@alumni.iu.edu. If you wish, you can use your IU student username (if available) as your alumni email username. If you don't remember your IU username, or didn't have one, you can generate a new one; you can also request an alias if a life event requires a change of username.

For help, email advhelp@iu.edu or call 812-856-2746.

Set up your account

Create an account

To request an account, go to Alumni Email Account.

Access your account

When you sign up for an alumni email address, you'll receive an email message at your alternate email address with instructions for accessing the alumni email service. For help, email advhelp@iu.edu or call 812-856-2746.

Go to https://mail.google.com/a/alumni.iu.edu, and then enter your email address and password.

Set a password

If you have updated your account with an alternate email address, select Forgot Password? on the alumni email login page. For help, email advhelp@iu.edu or call 812-856-2746.

Set up two-factor authentication

To set up two-factor authentication on your Gmail account, see the instructions at Turn on 2-Step Verification.

Set temporary forwarding from your IU email account to your IUAA account

After separating from IU, students can forward mail from username@iu.edu for one year by creating an alumni email account, and then setting up forwarding so that messages sent to your iu.edu email address arrive in your alumni email account inbox. UITS encourages you to set your forwarding to go to your alumni account, as mail will not be delivered to your IU student email account indefinitely.

Note:
You can only forward your student IU email account to your alumni email account for one year. During that time you should inform anyone that sends email to your student IU email account to use your new alumni email address instead. Forwards in place before July 1, 2023 will expire June 30, 2024.

To set up email forwarding:

  1. Create your alumni email account and log into it, as described above.
  2. Request forwarding at Alumni Account Registration.
    Note:
If you have difficulty with the form, contact Tier 2 from your alumni email account, and ask to have mail forwarded from your iu.edu email addresses to your alumni account. Make sure to include your full email address in this request (for example, username@alumni.iu.edu), as your alumni email account username may be different from your IU username.
  3. Create a redirect rule in Exchange.
Note:
IU alumni who forward their IU email to an external mailbox will not be able to opt out of external flagging; see Flag email sent from non-IU sources to help identify potential phishing attempts.

You may also transfer your Exchange account files and messages to your IU Alumni Association account or another Google account. For instructions, see Keep your Exchange account email messages and calendar appointments when leaving IU.

If you do not create an alumni email account, then you will no longer receive mail sent to your IU email addresses. Additionally, you will not be able to forward mail from your IU email addresses to a personal email account.

Maintain your alumni email account

Reset your password

If you have updated your account with an alternate email address for password recovery, go to https://mail.google.com/a/alumni.iu.edu, select Sign In, and then Forgot Password? For help, email advhelp@iu.edu or call 812-856-2746.

Change your alumni email username

If a life event requires a change to your username, you can request an alias.

Note:
While you have your IU student email account forwarded to your alumni account, the IUAA can't delete your old alumni email address/alias, because this would break your email forwarding.

To change your alumni email username on a Gmail address, email advhelp@iu.edu or call 812-856-2746.

Forward your alumni email to another account

To set up mail forwarding to another email account, see Automatically forward Gmail messages to another account.

Note:
Although mail forwarding is allowed, you must still log into your alumni email account at least once every 365 days so the account is not considered dormant.
