Overview

Indiana University has partnered with Turning Technologies, LLC, to offer student response products that are integrated with the Oncourse and Canvas learning management systems.

Turning Technologies ResponseCard devices (clickers) let students instantly respond to interactive questions during class and engage with their instructors. With the ResponseWare browser-based application, or available Android and iOS mobile apps, students can use their laptops, tablets, or smartphones as virtual ResponseCards. ResponseWare software can be used in the same classes as ResponseCard devices, but you can use ResponseWare only if your instructor permits the use of laptops or mobile devices in class.

You can share your ResponseCard device with another student for use in a different class, but you cannot share your ResponseWare license. If you have several classes that require a Turning Technologies student response product, you may be able to use the same product in each class, depending on requirements set by each instructor. Before you buy, check with all your instructors to determine which products are required or allowed in their classes.

Before you can use your Turning Technologies student response product in any of your classes, you must log into Oncourse or Canvas (depending on which learning management system the instructor is using) and register your device or license in every course in which you will use it.

Note: IU instructors may use whatever student response products they choose in their classes, but only Turning Technologies products are formally integrated with Oncourse and Canvas. To learn more about using student response systems in your class, contact your campus teaching and learning center.

Registering your Turning Technologies product for use in a class

Before you can use your Turning Technologies student response product in the classroom, you must register your device or license ID in whichever learning management system (Oncourse or Canvas) your instructor is using.

Finding your ResponseCard's device ID

You'll need to enter your clicker's device ID by hand when you register it in Oncourse and/or Canvas. The device ID is a six-character numeric or alphanumeric code that's printed on the back of the device, underneath the barcode.

Note: If you bought a used ResponseCard from a bookstore, you may need to remove the bookstore's barcode label to see the actual device ID.

Finding your ResponseWare license ID

In Oncourse, you won't need to enter your ResponseWare license ID. The system will automatically retrieve your license ID from your Turning Technologies account during the registration process (as explained below).

In Canvas, you'll need to enter your ResponseWare license ID by hand during the registration process (as explained below). If you don't know your ResponseWare license ID, sign into your Turning Technologies account to look it up. When you sign in, you should see your ResponseWare license ID displayed on the Response Devices tab.

Registering your ResponseCard or ResponseWare in Oncourse

To register your ResponseCard device or ResponseWare license in Oncourse:

  1. Log into Oncourse, and then go to the course in which you plan to use your ResponseCard or ResponseWare.
  2. In the menubar, click Turning Technologies:
    • To register a device, click ResponseCard, enter your ResponseCard's device ID in the "Device ID" field, and then click Register.
    • To register a license, click ResponseWare. You'll be prompted to sign into your Turning Technologies account. Once you do, Oncourse will retrieve your ResponseWare license ID automatically. To complete the registration, click Register. (Doing this automatically registers your ResponseWare license for use in all your Oncourse courses. However, to use ResponseWare in any classes taught in Canvas, you must register your license ID in that system, as well; see the instructions below.)

Note: To change or delete a device or license ID:

  1. Log into Oncourse, and then go to the course(s) in which your device or software is registered.
  2. In the menubar, click Turning Technologies, and then, under "My Registered Devices":
    • To change your device or license ID, next to the existing ID code, click Edit, change the ID number, and then click Update.
    • To delete your device or license ID, next to the existing ID code, click Delete.

Registering your ResponseCard or ResponseWare in Canvas

To register your ResponseCard device or ResponseWare license in Canvas:

  1. Log into Canvas, and then go to the course in which you plan to use your ResponseCard or ResponseWare.
  2. In the menubar, click Turning Technologies Registration.
