About HIPAA compliance training at IU
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) established rules protecting the privacy and security of individually identifiable health information. The HIPAA Privacy Rule and Security Rule set national standards requiring organizations and individuals to implement certain administrative, physical, and technical safeguards to maintain the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of protected health information (PHI).
To help ensure compliance with these rules, Indiana University requires annual HIPAA compliance training for all faculty, staff, residents, students, volunteers, and contracted third parties who have access to PHI.
Under IU's HIPAA Privacy and Security Compliance Plan, each IU HIPAA Affected Area is responsible for ensuring that its workforce meets the annual training requirement. The university's HIPAA Privacy and Security Officers coordinate and implement the trainings, and monitor compliance.
