Oncourse Turning Technologies tool: Overview
What it does
Turning Technologies has developed a tool for Oncourse that allows students to register their response devices (clickers) or licenses within a course site, and allows instructors to download a TurningPoint participant list of registered students, see students' registration status, and send email reminders to unregistered students.
Key concepts
Instructor's view: In the instructor's view, the tool lists students by Name, User ID, and Device ID. Click a column heading to sort the view.
Registering a student's device: Students should
generally register their own devices (see At IU, how do I buy and register a Turning Technologies device or license?); however, instructors can register a device for a
student or correct a device ID if necessary. Click a student's device
ID to edit an incorrectly entered number; click Not yet
entered to add a student's device ID. Instructors can only
register or modify a device ID for a student in that course, while the
student can choose to register the device for all his or her courses.

.tpl file: Click Export Roster in
TurningPoint Format to create a TurningPoint participant list
(a .tpl file) to use with the TurningPoint software,
which records students' responses in class.
Email reminders: Click Send Email to Unregistered
Students to send an email message reminding unregistered students
to register their devices. Students will receive messages in the
following format:
Subject: You need to register your Device ID
From: Instructor Name [
noreply@oncourse.iu.edu]Your instructor for the course [YOUR COURSE ID] has chosen to use Turning Technologies' student response system. You have not yet registered your ResponseCard or ResponseWare device ID. You can log in to the course here and register your device ID to ensure you receive class credit.
Things to consider
- The
Import Session Filelink allows you to upload a TurningPoint session file to the Gradebook. Currently, UITS does not recommend this method of importing grades; see Using Turning Technologies and Oncourse, how can I manage student data?
- The
Permissionslink allows you to manage access to the Turning Technologies tool by people with other roles; this feature is not yet fully developed.
