ARCHIVED: In Oncourse, when importing tests in bulk from Original Test and Survey into Tests & Surveys, how will the tests appear?

This content has been archived, and is no longer maintained by Indiana University. Information here may no longer be accurate, and links may no longer be available or reliable.

When you import tests exported in bulk from the Original Test and Survey tool into Tests & Surveys, some properties of the resulting assessments will be different from the original version. See the table below for the most important differences. Check the settings and questions of your tests carefully to make sure tests appear as you intended. If you need help, contact your campus teaching and learning center.

For instructions for importing tests, see ARCHIVED: Exporting assessments. For detailed migration help, see the Tests & Surveys Migration Guide (PDF). To learn how to use the Tests & Surveys tool, see ARCHIVED: Tests & Surveys.

Settings

When imported into Tests & Surveys, all assessments will be unpublished by default. See ARCHIVED: Publishing an assessment.

General Settings
Time Limit
Timed Assessment with Time Limit
Original Test and Survey displays the time in minutes; Tests & Surveys displays it in hours and minutes.
Tries per user Number of submissions allowed
Zero tries per user in Original Test and Survey is the equivalent of unlimited submissions in Tests & Surveys.
Auto-submit when time limit expires
N/A
Tests & Surveys automatically submits all in-progress assessments when the time limit expires.
Scramble Test Questions
Random within Part (applies to parts only, not to entire tests) - migration not working properly
If your test is set to scramble test questions, the resulting test upon import into Tests & Surveys will set question order to "Questions authored one-by-one", i.e., to show all questions in the order they appear in the test. You can manually create one or more question pools from your existing questions and set the part to randomly draw a certain number from a question pool. See ARCHIVED: Adding, editing, moving, copying, or removing a question pool or subpool.

Additionally, the import may cause the part name "DEFAULT" to display to students. You can keep it from displaying to students by editing it to "Default".
Allow others to Copy Questions
N/A
No direct equivalent in Tests & Surveys; for similar functionality, see ARCHIVED: Sharing question pools.
Feedback Settings
The Question Text N/A
No equivalent functionality in Tests and Surveys
The Default and Custom Comments
Selection-Level Feedback
WWW Page Settings (e.g., HTML Head, BODY Tag Attributes, Page Header and Footer, customized button texts)
N/A
No equivalent functionality in Tests & Surveys
Access Control Settings
Disable Student Access to Test
N/A
In Tests & Surveys, this is accomplished by publishing or retracting an assessment; see ARCHIVED: Publishing an assessment and ARCHIVED: Retracting or removing an assessment.
Disable Student Access to Test Results
No feedback will be displayed to the student (Settings: Feedback) - migration not working properly
The feedback settings of your test upon import will most likely be controlled by the feedback settings within Original Test and Survey rather than the access control settings. Check the feedback settings before publishing your assessment in Tests & Surveys. Choosing No feedback will be displayed to the student prevents students from seeing their scores.
Deny Student Access After Due Date
Password/Confirm N/A
Original Test and Survey requires only a password, while Tests & Surveys requires both username and password. To use the similar functionality in Tests & Surveys, manually set the High Security settings.
Do not allow listed IP addresses
N/A
No equivalent functionality in Tests & Surveys; for IP address security, use the option to allow only specified IP addresses (in the High Security settings)
Restrict to these groups N/A
Since the same groups may not exist in the new site, the migration tool will not assign this setting automatically. If you want to restrict your imported test to one or more groups, you will need to set this option manually.

Questions

Original Test and Survey field
Tests & Surveys field Notes
Inline Text
Information (applies to a part of a test)
The system will create a part for each Inline Text item, with "Inline Text" as the title and the Inline Text as the Information for that part. The questions that follow (until the next Inline Text item or section break) will be added to that part.
Section Break Part
Section Heading Text Title
The system will also create a part for each section break, but you can distinguish them from parts created from inline text based on the title.
Comments Information
Show all questions in this section
Questions authored one-by-one
Show X random questions from this section
N/A; equivalent setting is random draw from question pool, but the migration utility will not set this automatically
If your test contains section breaks set to "Show X random questions from this section", the parts corresponding to those section breaks will be set to show all questions in the order they appear within the test. You can manually create one or more question pools from your existing questions and set the part to randomly draw a certain number from a question pool. For instructions, see ARCHIVED: Re-establishing random-draw question delivery for tests migrated from Original Test and Survey to Tests & Surveys.
Multiple Choice
Multiple Choice (Single Correct)
Tests & Surveys uses one question type for multiple choice questions, with the single vs. multiple correct option set below the question text.
Multiple Correct Answer
Multiple Choice (Multiple Correct, Multiple Selection)
Points Answer Point Value
In Original Test and Survey, you enter the point value per correct answer; Tests & Surveys uses one point value for the question. The system will multiply the points per correct answer by the number of correct answers to create the answer point value for Tests & Surveys.
Fill-in-the-Blank Fill in the Blank
Allowed Answers Question Text
In Tests & Surveys, you indicate allowed answers within the question text, surrounded by curly braces. Upon import, your allowed answers from Original Test and Survey will appear after the question text in curly braces. You can edit the question to make sure the blank appears where you intend it.

Note: If a question has multiple allowed answers in Original Test and Survey (e.g., both "Shakespeare" and "William Shakespeare" are considered correct answers), Tests & Surveys may consider both answers to be required. Review such questions to make sure they appear as intended. To indicate multiple allowed answers for a single blank, separate the alternate forms by a pipe ( | ), e.g., {Shakespeare|William Shakespeare}
Short Answer or Essay Short Answer/Essay
Tests & Surveys uses one question type for all free-form questions, regardless of length.
Answer Model Short Answer
Matching Matching
Some matching questions may be reported as incompatible during export. In particular, matching questions where terms and definitions do not have one-to-one matches may generate errors.
Directions Question Text
Definitions Choice
Terms Match
Survey: Text Box Field and Survey: Text Area Field
Short Answer/Essay
Tests & Surveys does not distinguish between the test and survey versions of short answer/essay questions. In the migration, all survey questions will have the Answer Point Value set to 0.
Field Title Question Text
Survey Checkbox Field Survey (Yes/No)
No equivalent functionality in Tests & Surveys. Survey Checkbox Field questions will be imported as Survey questions, with checkboxes converted to radio buttons. You will not be able to edit the values for these buttons; you may want to delete such questions and re-add them manually as a different type of question.
Survey: Multiple Selection
Multiple Choice (Multiple Correct, Multiple Selection)
Because this is a survey question, there is no correct answer, but Tests & Surveys requires one, so all answers will be marked correct. The Answer Point Value will be set to 0.
Survey: Single Selection
Multiple Choice (Multiple Correct, Single Selection)
Survey: Rating (all types) Survey
Pre-defined (custom) ratings require no editing. User-defined ratings are imported with errors. After migration, reproduce as Multiple Choice with multiple correct and single selection options enabled.
Miscellaneous Fields for Questions
Skill Keyword
If a value exists for Skill, Category, or Topic, the system should enable the "Record metadata for Questions" setting in Tests & Surveys (under Metadata). If there is more than one value for the Keyword metadata field, the system will separate the values with a comma.

Note: If the combined Skill, Category, and Topic fields exceed 255 total characters, the import will fail.

Category Keyword
Topic Keyword
Points Answer Point Value
Comments or Field Attributes
Feedback (optional) or Correct Answer/Incorrect Answer (optional)
If comments exist in Original Test and Survey, the Feedback Settings for the test or survey will be set to "Selection-Level (A,B,C...) Feedback". Each comment will be filled into the appropriate field for the corresponding answer. You must manually edit the test's Feedback Delivery settings to determine when the students will see the feedback.

For Multiple Choice and Short Answer/Essay questions, comments will be filled into the "Feedback (optional)" field. For True-False and Fill-in-the-Blank questions, comments will be filled into both the "Correct Answer (optional)" and "Incorrect Answer (optional)" fields.
