ARCHIVED: How do I modify my BlackBerry's automatic connections to a Wi-Fi profile?

Like most wireless devices and smartphones, BlackBerrys can automatically connect to an available wireless network. If a device is configured for a network, automatic connection is the default behavior.

However, in some cases your BlackBerry might automatically connect to a network that you don't want. For example, if you have an AT&T BlackBerry on campus, it will connect to AT&T Wi-Fi for visitors, instead of the IU Secure network for IU students, faculty, and staff. To remedy this, IU users with AT&T BlackBerrys will need to reconfigure their devices to either:

  • Not automatically connect to AT&T wireless networks, or
  • Prefer the IU Secure network over the AT&T one.

Configuring your BlackBerry to no longer automatically connect to a specific wireless network

  1. Press the Menu key to bring up the entire folder list. In that list, select Manage Connections.
  2. In the window that appears, select Wi-Fi Options.
  3. You should see a list of networks under "Saved Wi-Fi Profiles". Navigate to the network for which you want to disable automatic connections, and then click to bring up the menu. Choose Edit.
  4. To bring up the menu, highlight and click Connection Mode:; select Manual.

Now when you enable the Wi-Fi connectivity on your BlackBerry, it will prompt you first before connecting to that specific network.

Changing the order of preference among multiple networks

If you have multiple Wi-Fi networks configured on your device, your BlackBerry will only connect to one at a time. If it sees more than one of those networks at once, it will connect to the first one at the top of its list. Because of this, when you're in an area with more than one Wi-Fi network available, you can control the order a BlackBerry chooses to connect to by simply re-ordering the list. For IU users, this means you can move IU Secure above AT&T Wi-Fi so that it will choose IU Secure first every time. To do this:

  1. Press the Menu key to bring up the entire folder list. In that list, select Manage Connections.
  2. In the window that appears, select Wi-Fi Options.
  3. You should now see a list of networks listed under "Saved Wi-Fi Profiles". Navigate to the network you want to move, and then click the Menu button and select Move.
  4. Using the trackball/trackpad/trackwheel, move the highlighted network up or down as appropriate; click the trackball/pad/wheel to plant the network in place.
  5. Click the Menu button and select Save; exit the screen.

Now your BlackBerry will attempt connections in the new order you just arranged.
