ARCHIVED: If I forget or have problems with my IU passphrase, what can I do?
Note: UITS began allowing passphrases for authentication in July 2006. The greater length and flexibility offered by passphrases results in enhanced security for IU users. For more, see ARCHIVED: How have passwords changed at IU?
If you forget or are having problems with your Indiana University Network ID passphrase, you will probably need to reset it. Students, faculty, staff, and affiliates have the following options:
-
Self-Service Passphrase Reset: Typically, the easiest
way to reset a forgotten passphrase is to do it online; see
At IU, how do I reset my passphrase using the Self-Service Passphrase Reset system?
Note: You must complete enrollment in the system (including establishing your identifying questions and answers) to reset your passphrase in this manner. See At IU, how do I enroll in the Self-Service Passphrase Reset system?
-
In person: Take a photo ID to one of the UITS
Support Center walk-in offices. You will
need to know your University ID number. Once a consultant has
confirmed your identity, allow 20 minutes for your passphrase change
to process.
Faculty or staff members can also contact their department's local support provider (LSP), who may have the ability to perform a passphrase reset; if not, use one of the other listed methods.
- By mail: If you have not enrolled in Self-Service Passphrase Reset and cannot visit the Support Center, see How can I request a passphrase reset by mail or fax?
Note: Support Center consultants cannot change passphrases over the telephone.
