As a graduate SAA in COAS, what do I need to know about email at IU?
If you are a graduate student at Indiana University who is also a Student Academic Appointee (SAA) (e.g., an Associate Instructor, Graduate Assistant, Research Assistant, or Faculty Assistant), you may have multiple email accounts to reflect your multiple roles. The following applies to SAAs in the College of Arts & Sciences (COAS).
All incoming students running the IT accounts Starter Kit have the option to create an IU student email account on either Imail (hosted by Microsoft) or Umail (hosted by Google). These vendor-hosted accounts are intended for general and academic use in your role as a student and will remain accessible to you after you leave IU; see What happens to my student computing accounts when I leave IU?
Due to FERPA concerns, the College of Arts & Sciences (COAS) requires each SAA to create an additional email account on Cyrus (hosted by IU). SAAs should use their Cyrus accounts to manage discussions containing confidential student data and other correspondence they conduct in their role as teaching assistants, instructors, or graders. Your Cyrus account will disable and its content will become unavailable when your SAA status ends.
If you are an SAA and you've already created your Imail or Umail account using the account Starter Kit, you may create a Cyrus account as follows:
- Go to the Account Management Service (AMS) at: https://itaccounts.iu.edu/
- Select
Manage my IU computing accounts.
- If you are prompted to log into the Central Authentication
Service (CAS), enter your Network ID.
- Click
create more accounts.
- Select
Cyrus, and then clickCreate Account.
The Cyrus account will usually be ready for use within one hour, although it can take up to 24 hours during times of heavy account-related activity or system maintenance.
Once your Cyrus account has been created, visit the AMS to indicate your preferred
destination account for incoming email addressed to your top-level
email address (e.g., username@indiana.edu,
username@iupui.edu, etc.). For more, see At IU, how do I choose my primary email address and preferred email account?; you can also contact your campus Support Center for help.
Note: COAS recommends that SAAs have their mail delivered to their Cyrus accounts. However, if you wish to retain your top-level address when you leave IU, you will need to update this forward setting to deliver to your Imail or Umail account before your accounts disable; see For Imail and Umail, what do I need to know when I leave IU?
