ARCHIVED: In Windows or Mac OS X, how do I reveal file extensions?

To make file extensions visible:

Windows

  1. In Windows 7 or Vista, from the Start menu, click Computer. In XP, double-click My Computer.

    Note: If this doesn't match what you see, refer to ARCHIVED: Get around in Windows.

  2. In Windows 7 and Vista only, press Alt to expose the menu bar.
  3. From the Tools menu, choose Folder options....
  4. Click the View tab, and uncheck Hide extensions for known file types.
  5. Click OK, or Apply and then OK.

Mac OS X

To show a file extension for a single file:

  1. Single-click the file whose extension you want to view, and then, from the File menu, select Get Info.
  2. In the "Name & Extension" section of the window that appears, uncheck Hide Extension.

To show all file extensions:

  1. Open the Finder, and then from the Finder menu, select Preferences....
  2. Under the Advanced tab, select Show all file extensions.
