ARCHIVED: In Windows or Mac OS X, how do I reveal file extensions?

To make file extensions visible:
Windows
- In Windows 7 or Vista, from the
menu, click . In XP, double-click .
Note: If this doesn't match what you see, refer to ARCHIVED: Get around in Windows.
- In Windows 7 and Vista only, press
Alt
to expose the menu bar. - From the menu, choose .
- Click the tab, and uncheck .
- Click , or and then .
Mac OS X
To show a file extension for a single file:
- Single-click the file whose extension you want to view, and then, from the menu, select .
- In the "Name & Extension" section of the window that appears, uncheck .
To show all file extensions:
- Open the Finder, and then from the menu, select .
- Under the tab, select .
