ARCHIVED: How do I configure my browser to access SharePoint Online and SharePoint at IU?

The SharePoint on-premises service is being replaced by SharePoint Online, available since July 2016. For more, see ARCHIVED: About the SharePoint retirement.

  • If you are a SharePoint site owner whose site has been disabled, you can visit SharePoint Standard Farm Migration to request an extension/re-enable. SharePoint will be permanently disabled no later than June 2, 2017; most sites should have migrated to SharePoint Online by March 31, 2017. Sites scheduled to be disabled on March 31 were disabled on April 3, 2017.
  • ARCHIVED: SharePoint My Sites were permanently retired on April 3, 2017.

SharePoint Online

Internet Explorer 7.0 and later

Note:
UITS strongly recommends that you use a supported browser, and not Internet Explorer (IE). Microsoft 365 apps and services no longer support Internet Explorer.

If you're have difficulty viewing SharePoint Online content in Internet Explorer, you may need to add SharePoint Online to your browser's list of trusted sites. Microsoft Edge does not support trusted sites.

  1. From the Tools menu, or the Tools drop-down at the upper right, select Internet Options.

    If the menu bar is hidden, press Alt to make it visible.

  2. Click the Security tab.
  3. Under "Add this website to the zone", add the following sites one at a time, clicking Add after each:
    • https://<sitename>.sharepoint.com
    • https://<sitename>-my.sharepoint.com
    • https://<sitename>-admin.sharepoint.com
    • https://*.appit.com
    • https://trust.k2.com
    • https://login.microsoftonline.com
  4. Click Close, and then OK. Restart your browser to make your changes go into effect.

SharePoint at IU

Note:
  • The following applies only to the UITS SharePoint service, not SharePoint Online.
  • SharePoint Online supports all common browsers.

Before attempting to access SharePoint resources at Indiana University, UITS strongly recommends that you run the UITS SharePoint Assistant, which will automatically configure your Windows or Mac computer for SharePoint; see ARCHIVED: About the UITS SharePoint Assistant.

SharePoint supports the following browsers:

  • Windows: Internet Explorer 7.0 and later, Firefox 3.0 and later
  • Mac: Safari 4.0 and later

Although most common browsers will work with SharePoint, some advanced features are available only in Internet Explorer.

If you are using Windows and are having difficulties accessing SharePoint, configure your browser by following the appropriate steps below.

If you are using Mac OS X, ARCHIVED: run the UITS SharePoint Assistant.

Internet Explorer 7.0 and later

Note:

  1. From the Tools menu, or the Tools drop-down at the upper right, select Internet Options.

    If the menu bar is hidden, press Alt to make it visible.

  2. On the Security tab, select Trusted Sites, and then click Sites.
  3. Under "Add this website to the zone", add the following sites one at a time, clicking Add after each:
    • https://*.sharepoint.iu.edu
    • https://sharepoint
    • https://mysharepoint

    If you want to add other SharePoint sites to your trusted sites, contact the site owners for the URLs.

  4. Click Close.
  5. Make sure Trusted Sites is still selected, and then click Custom Level.
  6. Scroll down to the User Authentication setting. Under "Logon", select Automatic logon with current user name and password. Click OK.
  7. Switch to the Connections tab, and then click LAN settings.
  8. Make sure Automatically detect settings is not selected. Click OK twice, and then restart Internet Explorer.

Firefox 3.0 and later

  1. In the address bar, enter about:config.

    The configuration interface will open; agree to the security warning if prompted.

  2. In the search box, enter uris. Double-click network.automatic-ntlm-auth.trusted-uris.
  3. Copy the following text (be sure to select all of it at once), and then paste it into the "Enter string value" dialog box:
      https://www.sharepoint.iu.edu,https://my.sharepoint.iu.edu,
      https://exchange.sharepoint.iu.edu

    Individual URLs should be separated with commas, but do not put spaces between them.

    If you want to add other SharePoint sites to your trusted sites, contact the site owners for the URLs.

  4. Click OK.
  5. Return to the filter results, double-click network.negotiate-auth.trusted-uris, and then enter the same text from step 3. Click OK.
  6. Restart Firefox.
