At IU, how can I read my Imail or Umail on my iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad?

Because your IU passphrase will not work with Imail or Umail on your mobile device, you must first create a vendor password; see How can I reset my Imail vendor password? or At IU, how do I set or reset my vendor password for Umail?

To automatically set up your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to access your Imail or Umail account, see What is the IU Mobile Device Configuration Utility? To configure your device manually, see the instructions below.

On this page:

Imail

You can connect to your Imail account through Exchange ActiveSync:

  1. From the Home screen, choose Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Add Account... > Microsoft Exchange.

  2. Enter the following:

    • Email: username@imail.iu.edu
    • Domain: Leave this field blank. (Only iOS 5 has this field.)
    • Username: username@imail.iu.edu (Only iOS 5 has this field.)
    • Password: Imail vendor password (not your IU passphrase)
    • Description: This is an optional field. You can leave it blank, or enter something like My Imail .

  3. Tap Next. The device will verify your information and update with server information; if the server field is left blank, enter outlook.com . Tap Next again.

  4. At this point, you can choose to have your contacts, calendars, and mail synchronized with your phone. Once you have made your selections, tap Save.

Note: If you are unable to connect to your Imail account through ActiveSync, try connecting your device to an IU network, either directly via IU Secure or through VPN. Alternatively, you may use IMAP, though an IMAP connection will only sync your mail, not your contacts and calendar; see At IU, how can I read my email on my iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad through an IMAP connection?

Note: If you are having trouble sending and receiving mail on your iOS device, you may want to remove the email account and then re-add it. Check your device instructions for assistance.

Umail

You can connect to your Umail account by configuring it as a Gmail account on your device:

  1. Enable IMAP for your Umail account; see How do I enable IMAP for my Umail account?

  2. From the Home screen, choose Settings > Mail, Contacts, and Calendars > Add Account... > Gmail.

  3. Enter the following:

    • Name: Your real name
    • Address: username@umail.iu.edu
    • Password: Umail vendor password (not your IU passphrase)
    • Description: A description of your account (e.g., Umail)

  4. Tap Save.

Note: If you are having trouble sending and receiving mail on your iOS device, you may want to remove the email account and then re-add it. Check your device instructions for assistance.
