As an instructor, using Courseload, how can I manage course materials?

View feature demonstrations relevant to this topic.

As an instructor using Courseload, you can do many of the same things your students can do: access course materials; interact with the text with highlights, annotations, and sticky notes; and share your text interactions with others in the class. For instructions, see Using Courseload for eTexts. For instructor-specific tasks, see below.

On this page:

Managing stacks

In Courseload, you can manage and organize your materials using stacks, which are like folders.

Creating a stack

  1. In your course in Courseload, in the left panel, click the downward arrow next to an item you'd like to place in a stack.

  2. In the window that pops up, add a name for the stack, as shown below.

The text box for the stack name says 'Add New Stack'

  3. Press Enter.

After you've created at least one stack, the next time you enter the course, you can add more stacks by clicking Add a Stack at the bottom of the left panel.

Renaming a stack

  1. In the left panel, next to the stack name, click the downward arrow.

  2. Click Rename Stack.

  3. Type the new name for the stack.

Deleting a stack

  1. In the left panel, next to the stack name, click the downward arrow.

  2. Click Delete Stack.

Adding materials to a stack

  1. In the left panel, next to the material you wish to add to a stack, click the downward arrow.

  2. Check the box next to the name of the stack you wish to add the material to, or type the name of a new stack.

Below the list of existing stacks is a text box for adding a new stack.

  3. Press Enter.

Managing content

You can upload and delete external content (PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, .txt, .html, and .htm files) through the Shared Files feature. Only instructors may share materials with others, but both instructors and students can add highlighting, annotations, and sticky notes to uploaded materials, just as they can with textbook materials; see Using Courseload.

Note: You cannot add a file larger than 5 MB.

Adding and sharing a document

  1. At the bottom of the left panel, click Manage Content.

  2. Select the file you want to add.

  3. Add a title (required) and a description (optional).

  4. Assign the file to the desired course.

  5. Certify that you have the rights to distribute the document, and that your actions comply with the Courseload Terms of Service.

  6. Click Add Document.

Embedding video or multimedia

  1. At the bottom of the left panel, click Manage Content.

  2. At the top of the panel, click the External Link tab.

  3. Enter a title.

  4. Choose one of the following options:

    • To link to the video or other content, enter the web link in the "Link" box. When someone clicks this link in your course, a new window will open.
    • To embed the content so that it plays directly within the Courseload viewer, copy and paste the embed code into the "Embed Code" field. (For more about obtaining embed codes, see Posting a video from an online host.)

  5. Enter a description (optional).

  6. Assign the material to the desired course.

  7. Certify that you have the rights to distribute the document, and that your actions comply with the Courseload Terms of Service.

  8. Click Add External Link.

Deleting content

  1. To the right of the content's title, click the down arrow.

  2. Click Delete from Course.

Importing content and text interactions from previous semesters

Warning: If you're using the same piece of content from a previous semester, and you import text interactions for that item, the imported interactions (e.g., annotations, highlights, and notes) will erase any notes or highlighting you have made in the current course. To avoid problems, import notes from previous semesters before making new notes.

  1. At the bottom of the left panel, click Manage Content.

  2. At the top of the panel, click the Import tab.

  3. Select the term and course from which you would like to copy content or text interactions.

  4. Select whether you would like to import only the materials, only the notes, or both.

  5. Select the term(s) and course(s) into which to import the content.

  6. Click Import Content.

Viewing statistics

Instructors can view statistics to gain insight into reading and markup trends.

To view statistics for a particular piece of content:

  1. Open the content in question, and then click the Stats button (
    The Stats button
     ).

  2. You'll see two panels, titled "Who's Reading?" and "Who's Engaged?", representing reading statistics and markup statistics, respectively. In the panel you're interested in, choose your course from the drop-down list.

  3. Click the title of the material for which you'd like to view statistics.

  4. In the graph that appears, each bar represents a student. Hover over a bar to view more details.

Answering student questions

When annotating their reading materials, students can choose to post annotations as questions; see Using Courseload. If your students have posted questions you haven't yet answered, you'll see a notification in the left panel showing the number of unanswered questions, e.g.:

The icon says 1 NEW if there is one new question, for example

To view and answer students' questions:

  1. Click the notification icon (shown above).

  2. Type your answer into the text box below the question, and click Add Reply.

Sample question, with text box for answer below

When you've added your reply, the student will see a similar alert with the number of new replies, and your answer will appear in the student's sidebar.
