Offline feature availability

While you have a book or other item checked out for offline access, you cannot do any of the following for that book, even when you're online. You must check the book back in to be able to use these features. (You will still be able to use them in any book that's not checked out, however.)

  • Search
  • View other students' annotations
  • Change settings for sharing your notes with others
  • Ask your instructor a question
  • Print

Initial setup

Currently, offline Courseload eTexts access is only available using the Google Chrome browser. If you don't already have it installed, download Chrome from Google and install it.

Once you have Chrome installed on your computer:

  1. In Chrome, go to the Chrome Web Store, type Courseload in the search box, and press Enter.

  2. Click Add to Chrome to install the Courseload Offline App.

Note: You will need to sign in using a Google account to install it (Umail doesn't work).

    1. If Chrome shows the warning "Extensions, apps and themes can harm your computer", click Continue.
    2. When prompted to "Install Courseload?", click Install.

  3. After you've installed the application, and while still connected to the Internet, access Courseload eTexts through Oncourse using Chrome, and refresh the browser window.

You should now be able to check out any of your books for reading offline, as described below.

Checking out a book to read offline

To read a book or other item offline, you first need to check it out while online. To do so:

  1. Access Courseload eTexts through Oncourse using Chrome.

  2. Open the course with the book you want to check out.

  3. Click Checkout below the book title.

  4. The download process may take a few minutes, depending on the size of the book. To cancel the checkout process, click the X in the progress bar.

You can read your offline version of the book for up to 14 days; after that time, the offline copy will expire, and you'll need to connect to the Internet and check in the book to continue reading. You can have more than one book checked out at a time.
