How do my mail forward settings affect CRES-encrypted messages I receive?
Depending on the forwarding you use with your email account and the source of the message, you might need to change the "To:" line when decrypting email encrypted by the Cisco Registered Envelope Service (CRES). This change might be necessary if the message was forwarded prior to being encrypted. The address(es) displayed on the "To:" line of CRES-encrypted messages are the address(es) the sender placed on the "To:" and "Cc:" lines when the message was composed, which might not be the address to which you forward your mail.
To determine the source of the encrypted message, see How can I tell if a CRES-encrypted message was sent from IU? To determine whether or how your email is forwarded, see At IU, how can I tell if my mail is forwarded? Then, use these guidelines to determine the specific steps you might have to take:
-
You use the Account Management Service to
forward mail sent to
username@campus.eduto an outside address. Note that this includes most Imail and Umail users:
-
If the message originated at IU: You will
need to change the "To:" line to reflect the receiving address
(e.g.,
username@gmail.com,username@imail.iu.edu).
-
If the message did not originate at IU: The
"To:" line should properly reflect your campus address
(
username@campus.edu), and will probably not need to be changed. If the message is a reply to an earlier encrypted message, you might need to change the address to the one at which you received the first message in the email thread.
-
If the message originated at IU: You will
need to change the "To:" line to reflect the receiving address
(e.g.,
-
You use a rule in your email client to
forward messages outside of IU:
-
If the message originated at IU, was originally
received at your Imail or Umail account, and was forwarded from
there: The "To:" line should properly reflect your full
Imail or Umail address (e.g.,
username@imail.iu.edu,username@umail.iu.edu), and will probably not need to be changed.
-
If the message originated at IU, was originally
received at your Exchange or Cyrus
(Webmail) account, and was forwarded from
there: You might need to change the "To:" line to reflect
the address of your external account (e.g.,
username@gmail.com).
-
If the message did not originate at IU: The
"To:" line should properly reflect your campus address
(
username@campus.edu), and will probably not need to be changed. If the message is a reply to an earlier encrypted message, you might need to change the address to the one at which you received the first message in the email thread.

If the message originated at IU, was originally
received at your Imail or Umail account, and was forwarded from
there: The "To:" line should properly reflect your full
Imail or Umail address (e.g.,
To read an encrypted message, follow the directions in How can I read a CRES-encrypted message? or How can I read a CRES-encrypted message received at my Imail or Umail account? If you have problems, see Why can I not read a CRES-encrypted message? or contact your campus Support Center.
