Access Canvas at IU

Overview

To log into Canvas at Indiana University, you must have a University account, an IU Guest account, or an IU group account. Canvas accounts are provisioned automatically by UITS for IU students, faculty, and staff.

If you have an IU Guest account, a Canvas account will be created for you the first time you attempt to log into Canvas. For instructions on establishing an IU Guest account, see About IU Guest accounts.

Canvas accounts are not automatically created for group or departmental accounts. To establish a Canvas account for a group or departmental account, send a request to the Canvas at IU administrators. Once the Canvas administrators confirm the creation of the account, you can use your IU group account username and passphrase to log into Canvas.

Access Canvas via a web browser

You can access Canvas at IU from a mobile device or web browser on a computer; see What are the browser and computer requirements for Canvas?

To log into Canvas using a web browser:

  1. Go to canvas.iu.edu.
  2. Select Log in.
  3. Log in with your credentials, your IU Guest account credentials, or your IU group account credentials.
Notes:
  • If you're already logged into IU Login via another IU service, such as One.IU, selecting Log in will take you directly to your Canvas user dashboard.
  • The canvas.iu.edu site mentioned above is the preferred site for accessing Canvas at IU. However, if that site is unavailable for any reason:

Access Canvas via mobile apps

Instructure has developed several mobile apps for Canvas, which are available as follows:

To access Canvas at IU using an Instructure mobile app:

  1. On your smartphone or tablet, open the app.
  2. If prompted to "Find your school or district", enter Indiana University. If prompted for your Canvas URL, enter http://iu.instructure.com.
    Note:
    • The IU Canvas gateway URL (canvas.iu.edu) will not work with Instructure's mobile apps.
    • If you have the Teacher role in some Canvas sites and are a student in others, both apps may be useful to you.
  3. Log in using with personal, group account, or IU Guest account credentials.
