Printing at IUE, IUS, IUPUC

At Indiana University, black-and-white (B&W) printing is funded through the Student Technology Fee, enabling 85% of students to print without additional cost.

Historically, each campus managed its own printing system; however, as of fall semester 2013, regional campuses are moving to a unified printing system with uniform printing policies across the university. The first of the regional campuses to make the transition are IU East, IU Southeast, and IU Purdue Columbus.

Standard printing allotments

Note: Student printing is not available from outside the IU network.

Student allotments are based on the number of credit hours in which a student is enrolled. After an allotment is used, students can add to their allotment through their bursar account. Once the development of a comprehensive card-swipe billing system is complete, students will be able to address their over-quota printing needs online.

All students receive per semester a standard printing allotment of 54 B&W simplex pages per credit hour enrolled (valued at $2.70, non-refundable), up to a maximum of 650 pages (a $32.50 value, non-refundable). One credit hour (54 B&W simplex pages) is granted at time of admission. The allotment is adjusted daily, based upon enrolled credit hours, through drop/add.

Semester printing balances are tabulated after finals every semester. Printing between semesters counts against the upcoming semester.

Note: Unused allotment dollars are not refundable. Refunds on student-contributed dollars may be requested upon graduation.

Rollover

After the end of each fall semester, a rollover of up to $15 (300 B&W simplex pages) of unused fall allotment will be rolled over into the spring semester. Similarly, following the end of the spring semester, up to $15 of unused spring allotment will be rolled over into summer.

Note: Rollover is not available for fall semester.

Students are encouraged to monitor their printing activity throughout the semester by logging into the Print Portal.

Supplemental printing allotments

Supplemental printing allotments are available to anyone with a valid IU username. Supplemental allotments are a good solution when:

  • Your printing needs are unpredictable and you want pay-as-you-go flexibility.
  • Your department wishes to compensate students and/or employees for work-related printing.
  • Your department is organizing a conference or workshop using the STCs and wishes to provide printing allotments for program participants.

Purchasing supplemental printing allotments

Supplemental allotments are available in 100-page increments for $5. Unused balances of purchased pages are automatically carried over into upcoming semesters.

Departments wishing to provide supplemental allotments for conferences or workshops should make those arrangements when requesting conference accounts; see About conference use of the STCs.

Individuals and departments can request supplemental allotments. To avoid delays, provide a departmental account number, the username of the individual, and the size of the supplement. Contact either a TCC consultant in a Student Technology Center or your campus Support Center for assistance.

Refunds

Credit for damaged or unprinted output is available upon request at most STC locations. See a TCC consultant or contact your campus Support Center as soon as possible after your loss. Refunds cannot be issued after the semester ends.

Refunds may be available for pages that are unacceptable due to printer or system error, system failure, or poor print quality, for example:

  • Unacceptable output due to low toner
  • Smudges on your printouts
  • Wrinkles in your pages
  • Incomplete print jobs due to system-generated errors or jobs cancelled at the printer

UITS cannot offer refunds for mistakes or output you did not expect, for example:

  • Color mismatching
  • Improper formatting
  • Print jobs taken by other people before you retrieve them from the printer
  • Jobs printed accidently or with too many pages
  • Multiple copies printed by mistake

Note: If a refund is issued, the consultant must retain the unacceptable pages whenever possible.

Notes

  • Printing allotment start and end dates: The current semester allotment will expire at midnight on the evening of the last day of the current term, as published in the Official Calendar of the Office of the Registrar.

Because different campuses have different semester starting/ending dates, your campus allotment may remain available for a few days past the end of the semester, but your allotment will never expire before the end of the current semester, nor will it begin after the beginning of the upcoming semester.

  • Semester allotments begin before classes start: All IU departments recognize the registrar's date for the official end of the term. However, many departments give their students assignments before the official start of classes. An early allotment start date thus avoids unnecessarily inconveniencing those students in departments with unique class schedules.
  • Avoiding printing over your allotment: To reduce your dependence on printing, conserve paper, and avoid waste, see ARCHIVED: Conserve paper when printing
  • If you go over your allotment: If you have exceeded your allotment, your output may not be printed until you have purchased additional pages.
  • Printing after graduation: At the end of each semester, your printing allotment is adjusted based on the number of credit hours for which you are enrolled for the upcoming semester. If you have purchased pages left over, those will remain on your IU account and available for your use as long as your IU account remains active.
