ARCHIVED: After running Get Connected, how do I configure my computer to use Windows Automatic Update instead of the IU Windows Update server?

Running Get Connected for Windows configures your computer to use the Indiana University Microsoft Update Service (msupdate.iu.edu) to identify and install critical operating system updates.

UITS recommends using the IU Microsoft Update Service as a quick and effective way to secure your Windows computer. The service automatically installs patches and updates for Windows and supported Microsoft software.

Note:
This service provides critical and security-related patches only; it does not provide drivers, feature packs, tools, or non-critical non-security updates. For more, see ARCHIVED: About the IU Microsoft Update Service using WSUS (Retired)

The IU service provides the same updates offered by Microsoft's Windows Automatic Update, but since the IU service is hosted on the IU network, its patches will download faster than patches you download from the Microsoft service. However, if you want to use Windows Automatic Update instead, you can make this change after you've completed the Get Connected process:

  1. In Windows 8.x or 10, press Win-q, and then select Control Panel. Alternatively, in Desktop view, move the mouse to the bottom right corner of the screen, then select Settings, and then Control Panel.

In Windows 7 or Vista, from the Start menu, select either Control Panel, or Settings and then Control Panel.

  2. Click Programs and Features.
  3. Find and double-click Get Connected Installer.
  4. From the uninstall menu, scroll down to "Windows Update Server", and then select Use Microsoft Windows Update Server.
  5. Click Uninstall.
  6. For this change to take effect, restart your computer.
