At IU, how do I forward my email?
Mail forwarding redirects incoming email for the Indiana University email domains (i.e.,indiana.edu, iupui.edu,
iue.edu, iuk.edu, iun.edu,
iusb.edu, ius.edu, iu.edu) to
your preferred email account. Forwarding email is a good idea if you
have more than one email account (e.g., a Cyrus mail account and an IU
Exchange account). Unless you log into each account regularly, you may
have unread messages in one of the accounts. Choosing a preferred
account and then forwarding your other accounts to it will ensure that
any mail addressed to your IU address is sent to the account where you
read mail. IU Exchange users should set Exchange as the preferred
account; messages sent between IU Exchange accounts land in the
recipient's Exchange mailbox regardless of the preferred email account
setting.
Note: IU Webmail is an email client you can use to read your Cyrus email at Indiana University. Using IU Webmail does not affect which mailbox your mail is delivered to.
Follow the steps below to forward mail from one or more accounts to a preferred address, and thus avoid creating a mail forwarding loop:
- Remove mail forwarding at your preferred address
- Register your preferred address
- Forward mail on your other accounts
- Check your mail forwarding
1. Remove mail forwarding at your preferred address
Choose one account from which you will read mail; this will be your preferred address. Make sure there is no forward set on it by removing all mail forwarding from it. To do so, log into the account you wish to use as your preferred address, and then follow the appropriate steps below.

Mail clients running on a PC
The setting should be available from the File tab (for
applications with the ribbon) or Tools menu (for applications
that do not have the ribbon). Click Rules, Message
Rules, or Rules and Alerts.
Mail clients running on a Mac
From the program menu (e.g., the Outlook menu or Mac Mail menu), click
Preferences and then Rules.
2. Register your preferred address
To register your preferred address with the Account Management
Service (AMS), see At IU, how do I choose my primary email address and preferred email account? Doing so notifies the IU
mail servers where to deliver mail addressed to your IU email account
(i.e., username@indiana.edu ,
username@iupui.edu ,
username@iue.edu ,
username@iuk.edu ,
username@iun.edu ,
username@iusb.edu , or
username@ius.edu , where username
is your username).
Note: To avoid creating a mail loop, do one of the following:
- Do not forward mail from your previous preferred address until the next day.
- Forward your previously preferred address to your new preferred address instead of your default address, and then revise its forwarding to your default address the next day.
3. Forward mail on your other accounts
Forward mail on all your other accounts except your
preferred address to your IU email address (i.e.,
username@indiana.edu ,
username@iupui.edu ,
username@iue.edu ,
username@iuk.edu ,
username@iun.edu ,
username@iusb.edu , or
username@ius.edu ), replacing
username with your username:
