ARCHIVED: At IU, how do I create a new course in Canvas?

This content has been archived, and is no longer maintained by Indiana University. Information here may no longer be accurate, and links may no longer be available or reliable.
Note:
Several months before the beginning of each semester, official courses for academic credit at Indiana University are provisioned automatically in Canvas through integration with the university's Student Information System (SIS). Consequently, if you're assigned to teach an official course, that course will be created for you automatically. However, you can manually create additional courses in Canvas to serve other purposes, e.g., to practice with course tools, development, and organization; to create a master template for a course; or to deliver non-credit courses and other informal learning opportunities.

If you are assigned the "teacher" role in at least one course in Canvas at IU, you can create a new course on your own:

  1. Log into Canvas at IU from the web or the mobile app; for help, see Access Canvas at IU
  2. In the top left corner, click the Canvas logo.
  3. On the right, click Start a New Course.
  4. Enter a course name, set the content license, and then click Create Course. This will create a course shell and display its home page.

If you are an IU faculty or staff member, but do not have the "teacher" role in any courses in Canvas, email the UITS Mission Critical team to request a course. In your request, provide a descriptive name for the course and a course code (a short name with no spaces). When the new course is created, you will receive an automated invitation to join it as a teacher.

To learn how to perform common tasks in Canvas, consult the Canvas Guides.
