ARCHIVED: What is a blog?

The term "blog" is a contraction of the term "weblog". The content of blogs can vary greatly depending on the individual blogger, and can include text, images, and other data. Some blogs are highly personal, chronological entries detailing the blogger's day-to-day life. Others are simply lists of interesting web links found by the blogger or contributed by readers of the blog. Other blogs may serve as sounding boards for commentary on any topic the blogger finds interesting.

Anyone with personal web space and a working knowledge of HTML can post and maintain a blog. However, for those who don't have personal web space or who aren't familiar with HTML, several hosting services provide free web space and easy-to-use maintenance interfaces.
